Anyone have specific free youtube/online courses learning the basics of videography? Or, care to share their experience on how they got started?

Are you a beginner with it all? Equipment, technical skills, cinematography technique, etc.

I did a lot of YouTube searching and watching before I settled on a few channels I liked. For me, by far, I find Simon d’Entremont’s channel to have the best technical skills instruction and also just great practical advice. He shoots Canon but his channel content applies across brands. He is more photo focused than video. But a lot of what he talks about crosses over between the twos. No equipment reviews. Just covers technical skills and technique. I still search and watch content from many channels but I often search specifically for something he did on the subject.

I find just searching YT for something like “videography for beginners” and viewing the videos with the most views will get you started finding good YT content. You’ll eventually find channels and content you gel with and watch regularly.

I watched a ton of videos on editing and workflow, gravitating to the styles that appeal to me the most. Took a lot of test videos and photos along with spending hours playing around on editing software.

Yep. Total newb.

Check out www.udemy.com. It is an online "course" style platform that allows you to purchase classes online. There are many, many courses on everything you can think of - especially photography and videography. They have introductory prices all the time - around the $10-$30 range for a course, and once purchased, the course stays in your account, so you can come back and watch it at any time. I have purchase numerous courses through this platform for the past 5-8 years and they are still in my account, and I reference them all the time.

Be sure to check out the reviews on the courses also, and they have sample videos of each class to review too, in case you want to see the style of the instructor, etc.
