Bedding Recoil Lug on HMR

I’m trying to squeeze a little more accuracy out of my Wilderness HMR. I still get an occasional flier on my 5 shot groups so I am bedding the recoil lug. I am using standard, two part JB Weld epoxy and Imperial sizing wax as a releasing agent.

If anyone has done a recoil lug bed job, can you look at photo and tell if I applied enough two part epoxy? I tried to keep it on the walls of the recoil lug recess.

I would tape the front of the lug and spread the bedding compound to the mag opening. If you’re gonna do a lug, might as well do it all.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the HMR is essentially a chassis. The recoil lug is what I figure might have some play that could use bedding.

Meh it turned ok. The recoil lug pushed some of the epoxy down into the recoil lug recess. I would say it did tighten the tolerance a bit more in that slot. I’ll see how it shoots.

A chassis is a step up from a standard inlet, but nothing will compete with an actual bed job.

In my experiences, it’s as good as any of the rest of them. I’d probably use devcon 10110 but I wouldn’t use it up quick enough. I like jb weld cause it stays where you put it for the most part.

What led to choosing JB Weld?

Higher temp tolerance and strength.

Pulled the barrel last night and put more epoxy in the lug recess. It is now a perfect tight fit with zero movement when you remove action screws. Before bedding the recoil lug, the barreled action can move back and forth because the lug recess is larger than the recoil lug. I bet this will help the fliers.

Any updates? How does it shoot with the recoil lug bedded? I always thought that because the scope is mounted directly to the receiver and barrel, the bedding isn't all that necessary.
