WTB Barrel Vise

The viper vice is a good one if someone offers it. I picked up my second one. I like that they are wide for the carbon fiber. I feel better about that.

Which version do you have? I see an older one with the 4 post and a newer one with 2 post.

LOL. That’s the best info yet considering I’m trying to take a factory Tikka 6.5 PRC barrel off.

The SAC with Tikka inserts is the way to go I hear. I am gonna order one soon.

I have pulled lots of barrels, some hard ones. I had a few minutes one day and tried the Tikka and it slipped in the vice. I use drywall tape so not biggie.

Pulling the factory barrel is always the problem. Some guys use a lathe or hacksaw to cut a relief behind the shoulder.

Would you say the viper vise with some drywall tape (I also read leather works) could work? I’m trying to avoid the SAC prices if I can. Would also like to save the barrel if possible so trying not to cut it if I don’t have to.

I'm 4 Tikka barrels into my viper vice. I have learned a little more each time. I soak in a penetraiting oil for a couple days, then tighten TF out of the vice with drywall tape on the barrel. Apply steady hard pressure on the external action wrench and apply some quick, hard wacks with a hammer. I've put marks on 3 out of 4 barrels, from not tightening the vice enough the first time. The first 3 were T3's, the last one, that didn't mark up was a T3x. Not sure if I'm just getting better, or if T3x's are easier. Torqueing on the new barrel with an inside action wrench to 80-90lbs has been easy and eventless.

There is no easy way to pull a Tikka barrel.

The viper can work, but technique is critical, even then it can fail.

Heat, Kroil, an absurdly tight barrel vice, and a sharp heavy whack are the way.

@Mike D Texas is right.

I have one of the 4 screw vipers that I would sell - it’s used but not abused. But the other guys are right and just get the SAC with the Tikka bushings if you can swing it. So much better

Buy the SAC and sell it to me used, consider it a rental fee, lol. 😂
Looks like I may be heading that way. SAC is out of stock of the modular and the bravo. Maybe I’ll get lucky and someone has a used one. Still open to other ones too but SAC seems to be the popular choice.

Buy the SAC. 100% worth the money. Tikka barrels are a breeze to pull with good equipment.

They have them if you buy with only the Tikka insert. They don’t have some of the other inserts to sell the kit.

I talked with them the other day.

I used a midwayusa barrel vice with DIY oak 2x2 bushings on 2 Tikkas last night and had the barrels off in 5 minutes without heat or cold or PB.
