Question for those of you that don't clean your barrels. Do you run a patch of oil down the barrel at the end of hunting season if you know you won't be shooting your rifles for a few months? Thank You!

In AZ desert, nothing rusts so I can get away with nothing… if I were in a place where humidity is a problem I would patch the inside of the barrel.

BCD,

Many, MANY opinions on barrel cleaning. Here's my humble opinion.

After each range session - 15 to 30 rounds - I run a "LIGHTLY oiled" Bore Snake thru my barrel - twice. Put it in the safe. Repeat this after each range session. In my experience - rifle accuracy isn't negatively affected by the LIGHT oiling before each range trip.

When the time comes to store the rifle - for a few months and more - clean the barrel - oil it LIGHTLY - store it.

Sorry - no scientific proof in any of this. Just my experience based on what I've read and done over many long years. Hope that helps.

A patch with a light oil is fine. Keep in mind that a good portion of the bore is coated in a very thin layer of copper, which will also oxidize in a lot of conditions. While not mandatory, it's always a good idea to at least run a dry patch down your barrel at the beginning of the season before you shoot if it's been sitting awhile.

Arizona here too. Very light coat of oil, esp on blued steel. The action of running a cleaning rod calms me.
