Just Google Earth, Maps etc...?

Got pretty good intel on where I'm going in Utah, but will head over to put boots on the ground this month 1300 miles round trip...Crazy, but with it being maybe a once in the life time type tag, for sure a five year wait...Do you do it, or not?

Your longest scouting trip, just to see your unit?

What unit did you draw? If you have the time and money so it doesn't affect the actual hunt I say do it

When I was traveling to Colorado to hunt before I moved here. I would come a week early for the hunt to scout. That makes more sense to me than scouting now.

Yes... it's worth it. Or show up early to scout. One of the best things you can do while scouting is to eliminate areas, which you cannot reliably do from maps and the internet. There's nothing worse that doing your scouting and learning the area during your hunt. My 2 cents... Ed F

I'd say yes. I just did a 3 day backpacking trip to scout new drainages. We found water, sign, trails and camping areas that we can use when we go back to hunt. Also it's a 14 hour drive one way. Again I'd say it was well worth it.

I like your '2 cents' Ed...

Last year we drove from Pa to Wy. On leftover cow tags. To scout and hunt. Boots on the ground are all ways best.

It all depends on what you're scouting for. If you want to check out different areas, and get the lay of the land you can go now. If you're looking for elk it's better to do it a week before the hunt.

Being retired, and living in elk country that I hunt. I'm scouting 250 days a year. I'm not really looking for elk right now. I find them now, but things change when pressure goes up.
