Banning Hunting Tech in Idaho

After thinking about this, IFG should have dropped this proposal altogether and redrawn the regs to reflect possession rather than intent. As it is written now, it's absolutely unenforceable.

Yeah we’ll see. Gonna reach out to the local officer and see what their plan is for enforcement if there even is one.

That has to be in the top ten of most useless regulations. Like you said how would you even begin to enforce that?

How do you begin to enforce any regulations in wild places where there’s not a game warden for 100 miles?

This is a leap in the right direction and should have been done years ago. Law abiding hunters will follow the new regs, others that break (what they feel are arbitrary) laws while hunting anyways might continue to use their thermals.

Yep, should have made illegal the mere possession of any banned technologies while also in possession of a valid deer/elk tag or while assisting another hunter who does.

Agree 100%. A ban on possession in the field during those dates would have been the best, but this is much better than a free for all on using these technologies. We have a lot of laws on the books that are difficult to enforce. This won't stop the illegal use of all of these technologies, but it will prevent competition from pushing law abiding hunters to start using these technologies.

My guess is this is how they will enforce it and let the judge figure out intention based on evidence

Having a wolf or cougar tag, or simply claiming to be hunting coyotes, solves that citation. A judge would probably throw that citation right out of court.

Wrong. Let me explain -

It’s no different when it comes to idiots who bait illegally for elk and deer here in N Idaho, mainly Washington NRs in my experience. The think becuse they can bait in their state they can do it here. When I report to the warden and send him pictures and GPS coordinates he can only write them a citation if they are caught in the act hunting over the bait for said deer and elk, because it’s legal to bait bears.

So this is no different. If a warden is writing a citation for Thermals or cell cams he will have the evidence needed on his side, which will be rare I’ll admit. The judge won’t toss out a citation when clear evidence is there. But I bet the said hunter caught won’t even try to argue when he sees the evidence. It’ll be a weak fine I bet, which sucks.

That’s how I feel

I’ll follow every law they just put out. And I know a lot of other guys will too. So it is progress.

Hunters were coming on our outfitted hunts with thermals and that always felt like pressure because I didn’t have one. Now it doesn’t.

Same with drones, I only had 1 hunter that wanted to bring one and I told him no, even though under those regs, it was legal if he waited 24 hours after he flew,. But with these new regs, now it’s just a hard no.

may as well outlaw hiring guides to live with your governor tag animal until you show up and shoot it. we somehow chalk that up to conservation.
