Hey guys, just moved out west a few months ago. Need to pick up a new winter hobby, thinking about backcountry skiing. Tons of trails around where I live. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a solid set of skis. Wouldn't like to pay more than $300 is possible. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

You're looking to alpine or cross-country? I assume you mean cross-country since you mentioned trails. I think you can get a regular set up for about that much. Or used from someplace that rents skis that is getting rid of their old ones. If you are talking alpine, $300 won't cut it for the skis and boots let alone other equipment. You'll need an avy beacon as well as probe and shovel. The beacon won't do you any good if you're not with a partner so you'll need to find one of those, but they don't cost anything.

Where do you live? I know some people in some of the ski shops around the state you can go in and talk to.
