I downloaded backcountry navigator into my LG G3. I downloaded some maps but when I put my phone in airplane mode it says I have to turn on location. Location shows on. I thought I read that people used this app in airplane mode. Am I mistaken and this app does not work in airplane mode?

I am using the free version. Is there a better GPS app that works in airplane mode?

Location should work in airplane mode. Make sure your location is set to "high accuracy" not "battery saving" or "mobile networks only".
BC Navigator has worked flawlessly for me the last few years.

I have an app called TOPO! It was $8. Works extremely well. I can download 1:24000 maps for just about anywhere, get elevation, use MGRS, UTM or LAT/LONG. It also allows me to place pins and transfer to different devices, but I haven't done that yet. I used it quite a bit last year in Montana and all the time here in Colorado.

I have used Backcountry Navigator for years; it is my favorite (and I have tried several others). It depends on how out of date your G3 is if you can use GPS while in Airplane Mode out of the box. In the older versions of Android this isn't really possible without an application that was written by the same guys called "GPS Airtime".

I have also used Backcountry Navigator for a few years. Mine works in airplane mode with my Samsungs.

I have all those plus Gaia and Earthmate. I do like onX, but the annual fee is a little bit of a turnoff. Funny, I have a deeper too.

MuleyFever, to use GPS in BCN hit the button that looks like crosshairs with a dot in the middle and then select 'My Location(center)'. Even in Airplane mode you should see a message pop up towards the bottom of the screen that says 'GPS location has been activated...'. Remember to select 'Stop Using GPS(saves power)' when you aren't using it, although it has gotten better than it used to and you can forget now and then without worrying that your phone will be 50% down the next time you look at it.

all this tech is interesting I suppose, but what happens when the net goes down, or your battery is TU, or the thing breaks, etc? Can you still use man & compass to figure out where you are? (assuming you carry them as backups?) I'm curious, as I don't have or use any of the tech tools available, including an i-phone or whatever it is I see young peoples' eyes glued to all the time. I do carry map&compass, and can use a sextant with pretty decent accuracy as well, but find an altimeter watch, map&compass always works, and doesn't need recharging. I see all these new technologies out there, and think "wow..another thing to go wrong when you need it". Am I wrong? About the only tech thing I see I could need is a texting sat com device to let my worrying wife know her forest-roaming tyrannosaurus is still upright and hoofing it.

When batteries die or the device breaks, those of us that use them just sit down and cry and wait for starvation to take us. J/k

I can't speak for everyone but everyone I know can use a map and compass reasonably well. Most just prefer the convenience of electronics. I don't personally carry a dedicated gps as my phone and Delorme inreach can give me UTM coordinates and that's plenty convenient enough for me.
