So opening morning we are 200 yds from a decent bull. Swirling wind so we sit tight gonna let it play out. Some jackass comes strolling through with his bow on his back and gear for a few days. Says hi and rolls on through to the saddle where the bull is and starts pitching camp. As we watch the bull slip downhill and away. Yea it's public land but that's bs. In my home state it would have been a fistfight. Just my rant for the week.

Oh yea, also met a guy who was from somewhere else. Accent sounded Australian. Clearly not from here. Real polite, asked all the rite questions, genuinely concerned with not stepping on others. And he wasn't even from the US. He restored my faith in my fellow man a little.

Did you tell him the situation? If not, I don’t get your complaint. If you did, the. I can’t image someone doing that. I would be pissed.

Didn't have the opportunity to tell. When u walk up behind three guys laying down on a ridge glassing do you walk right by waving in talking a few feet away and cut down in front. First time we saw him was his feet in front of our binos

Should have fought him over that injustice!

Or if it happens again, talk to him.

Seems like he should have known that you were on to something but even more odd that you didn't tell him outright that he was about to blow your opportunity.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would be so dumb as to knowingly blow an elk out for someone else, especially when you're in the hills where accidents happen and you're out numbered 3 to 1.

Seems like you missed your chance at setting up an ambush on the bull, as soon as you realized what he was doing you should have made a move to get in front of the bull. Sometimes you have to use the other hunters to your advantage.

If you didn't inform him of your situation then it's on you. You can't expect a guy to stop his plan because he meets some guys sitting on a hill side glassing or doing whatever. No one would make it anywhere if we had to stop and turn around every time we got close to a person.

Now if you told him your situation then you have every right to be pissed off.
Must not have much public land in your home state if this would cause a fist fight, that's a bit immature.

I sort of doubt if you would of had a fight in your home state since you obviously didn't have the cojones to talk to the guy and tell him he was screwing up your stalk. I agree that the guy was an idiot but sometimes you have to explain to an idiot why he is one. By the way, the word is ediquette.

A fist fight in your home state? That's odd, never once have I checked my temper at a state line.

I think its pretty hard to backseat quarterback here and call the offender an idiot? For all we know he had absolutely no idea that he was screwing something up for the OP. He was walking through public land, perhaps on a trail. There was no communication between the two groups other than "hi." I think the op could have done a little more to help this situation. I think it could have easily been me, exhausted hiking in, just trying to get to my pre determined camp spot, no idea that there were animals i was spooking.

I walked up on a guy one time and didnt know he was there till I practically stepped on him. At that point my options were limited and after an awkward "hello" I did my best to put some space in between us but it was close to sundown and I was only able to get a few hundred yards from him before hunkering down. I'm sure it pissed him off and I wasn't too happy about the sitch but it was what it was. There were no other hunters in the area as far as I knew and I picked out a clump of trees that he happened to be in from half a mile away. My point is that maybe he didnt know of your presence until it was too late and then didnt know what to do. And by the sounds of things he probably didnt know of the elk you were on. Not to defend anyone but it is possible he felt very awkward and also didnt understand the full extent of what was happening.
I also had a sitch once where I passed a guy on a trail in the dark on the way in. The guy panicked knowing I was in a better spot than him and took a 600+ yard shot a herd bull that I was closer to than him. He missed and 30+ elk drained out of the meadow. I ran into him later and he told me his story. It was tough to hear and walk away from knowing he was an idiot but 4 days later I killed the biggest bull of my life and I know he went home empty handed so....

And I'll tell you that both of these stories happened 5 miles from the nearest road and a mile from the closest trail.

Suck it up I guess. You can't control these things. Keep pushing.

I totally read the title as "etadik"..... yeah...

If he knew what was up that's a dick move but, public land...

If he didn't know then well it was an honest mistake, public land...

Public land, move on. I'm sure you, me and everyone else has f***** up someone else's hunt at some point.
