As I sit here bored out of my mind waiting for Tuesday to head to Canada for a Stone Sheep/goat hunt with my dad, I decided that I should share my DumbA$$ attack with the rest of you. We were both supposed to leave for BC 3 days ago (thursday) for my dads Stone Sheep/Moose/bou hunt and my goat hunt. The hunt is scheduled for 15 AUG-30 AUG.

My mom shot me a txt last wednesday afternoon asking if my passport was current. I instantly got the cold sweats and tried to convince myself that it was probably good. After sitting at work for another hour I couldn't take it and ran home to look. NOPE! Expired... Shit... Now what?

After a couple hours of research, pouting, anger, depression, and beer I decided my only option was to head to Chicago Friday morning and get a new one the same day. That was a solid 13 hour round trip that totaled close to $400 all said and done, but I have a current passport! I also had the pleasure of being on the phone with the airlines for a solid 4 hours total while I begged and pleaded to get my ticket changed reasonably. To get it changed to this weekend was going to be another $2k. I settled for Tuesday's flights for the $200 ticket change and a $130 airfare difference.

I feel that I salvaged it as well as I feasibly could. I will miss probably 4 solid days of hunting with my ol man for his stone, but it could be worse! Goat season doesn't open until the 25th anyhow, so that's no big deal.

Moral of the story... It doesn't matter how well your bow is tuned or how perfectly lined out you have your gear if you are sitting on your ass with an expired passport! I'm still not sure how that slipped my mind over the last 6 months, but it did. I bet it doesn't happen again!

Believe it or not this is a true story. I work with this dumbazz. But glad you got it all cleared up little buddy. Btw I needs my elk call before you leave.

I've heard both ways on that. Customs also said I MUST have one to return to the US... I figured I would just eat a couple days and play it safe.

Here's to hoping the beginning is the only rough patch on your hunt. Hope you have a great time. Take some pics to share.

Yep need a passport both ways now. Try flying a bunch of fellow employees into the country and having one of them forget his passport. Far from cool when my 24 hour earlier reported manifest no longer matches my passenger load and we are one passport short. That equals a long sit on the airplane, with an armed customs agent.

Good luck

Yep, I was used to just heading north whenever I felt like it. A couple years ago I wanted to take the family to BC on a fishing jaunt on a whim, before I realized that we now all needed passports to do that. Good luck on your hunt.

The passport issue is getting ridiculous.
No more day trips to Mexico or Canada without one. :(

In BC we can get an "enhanced" drivers licence that works in place of a passport for going to the US. Maybe your state has something similar?

Yeah we have one that is good for Canada I just found in researching but might as well just get a passport for the trouble. Man I used to drive up to see my grandparents all the time and never once even showed my birth cert, never was even asked for it. I think it is crazy to need special docs to go in and out of Canada. Mexico is diff with all the drug and cartel issues.

You think it's crazy we need special documents to leave and return to the country? Are you satisfied with the level of illegal immigration prevention we have?

Air you need a passport both ways
Ground you don't need one to get into canada, but you do need one to return to the US. Highest form of I'd you can possess, worth having.

Tip to the op - go I to outlook and pit a reminder in 6 months before it expires...

I never said that the enhanced drivers license was a great idea. I was simply asking why you said

I think it is crazy to need special docs to go in and out of Canada.

Is it not leaving the country, is it not a border? I understand the big issue is the Mexican border but why treat entry into our country differently? So if you feel a passport is the way then we should need a passport. Just because once upon a time you didn't need anything special isn't a good enough reason to keep doing it. Times are very different now and our borders should be a high priority.

Guess i'm just not as worried about the Canadian border. Borders should be a priority, mainly 100% of the effort IMO should be the southern border.
