She is shooting a Hoyt Powermax Vicxen 25” draw length.

She is shooting 43# now, and she wants to get to 45# for hunting season (Iowa whitetail).

Any idea on spine for her, also which arrow shaft would be best (5 mm or bigger, no micro shafts as I don’t like outserts).

I want her to be at 500 grains all in for penetration, likely shooting Magnus Stinger 150’s or Cutthroat 150’s

Thanks!

500 or 600 spine depending on how short you cut the arrows and how much total weight you end up putting on the front. With a 7-8 gpi shaft around 25" long, you'll need a lot (100+ gr) of insert/footer weight to get to 500 gr TAW with a 150 gr head. Depending on anticipated shot distances, you may want to go a bit lighter. I'd suggest playing around with different head/insert weight combos and testing actual trajectories before you make a final decision on her hunting setup. For reference, here's Easton's spine chart:

Yes. I don’t like cutting arrows shorter than that even if her draw was less than that.
If you’re wanting to run 150head I would stick with a standard hit insert also.

How long did you cut her arrows?
As I recall they were about 26.5 or 27. I’d have to look. I tried a 600 spine cut short and they were too weak. I just cut it back a little at a time until the bare shaft was flying straight.

She prefers the stick bow, so I haven’t looked at that setup in quite some time.

May even go with aluminums, she isn't wanting to spend a ton of $ and we can get a doz real cheap.

Any idea which spine she would need?

@KickinNDishin is shooting a 400 Gold Tip pierce, with Ethics stainless inserts and collars with 125gr heads. Right around 25" arrow length, 25.5" draw I think and about 50lbs. Ends up about 525gr at 190fps from a first gen Eva Shokey. I wouldn't hesitate to let her shoot at anything in Colorado, including moose, and her sight covers out to 60 or 65 yards I think.

My logic in that arrow weight was that I have seen a handful of bulls shot with 500-600gr arrows going 160-180fps with two blade heads end up dead 50 yards later.

In her case, trajectory isn't a big deal because she isn't going to shoot without things being perfect with knowing the distance, and 40 yards is her max. She won the 3d league the last couple years and won the first half so far this year.

I don't know what would be different for whitetail.

Overkill… I’m shooting 360g @65lb and have no trouble with whitetail. Deer did not become armor plated anytime recently, hit them in the lungs and you’ll be fine. 500g @45# and 25” will make judging distance a nightmare. I wouldn’t even go that heavy to shoot an elk, even if I was shooting 80# @30”.

Have you killed an elk?

Well I don't agree with that but...

I have killed an elk lol.

@Scorpion My experience with getting a hunting arrow for my wife puts me right in the 400-425 taw, arrow cut to very close to her draw length and she will maybe shoot 50 yards under ideal conditions, but most likely less than 40.

The short draw, low poundage bows girls shoot are not nearly as forgiving as the faster bows we shoot because of the speed difference. This is for most people.

Get her shooting softball size groups ( which it seems like she has no problem with that) and a good arrow and a COC head. Any bull with in 40 yards will be in danger. Most shots are less than that anyways.

Went with Scheels 500 spine Vendetta Pro (Victory arrows) 100 gr Gold Tip insert, 125 points.
Puts her at 425 total arrow weight. Magnus Stinger 125’s shooting really well for her.
Gonna order Buzzcut 125 four blade for her.
Not much speed, wouldn’t expect there to be with a 43# bow that isn’t top of the line.
If she really gets into hunting we’ll upgrade her bow next year.
Thanks all
