I have a buddy that picked up a ruger ar recently, it came with a fairly heavy stock trigger (aprox 8lbs), any recommendations for a decent aftermarket trigger under $175?

I'm partial to the Elf service triggers most of the time but the Elf SE is what I put in my more budget friendly builds. They've been great so far and come in right at the price point you're looking at. I prefer the flat trigger shoe on both.

I put a TriggerTech in my Daniel Defense. It was a totally different rifle after that. Well worth the upgrade.

I have a Rock River Arms varmint trigger on an AR. I think it’s about the best deal out there. You can find them for about $80. It’s a 2-stage that’s supposedly set for 3.5#. Mine is a hair under 3# and super crisp. Honestly, it’s a better trigger than the 3.5# CMC trigger on my buddy’s AR-10. These triggers don’t seem to get the love that the the LaRue models do, but they are really good.

You can find geissele triggers on sale in that price range regularly on palmetto state or during any major holiday

I've played around with Elfman, CMC, Rock River, Geissele, and LaRue. LaRue is by far my favorite. EDM cut from S7 tool steel, not MIM like a certain popular brand that costs over twice as much...

Larue MBT-2S or whatever flavor of Geissele you prefer on sale are the easy answers. Cassette style drop in triggers are known to have more issues than mil-spec style triggers.

I have 3 of those, excellent triggers.
