Which one?? There are many on the market. The Katadyn Base Camp, is my favorite been using them for many years and the new version with the improved filter and see through window is even better.

The platy? I have the 2.0. It filters very fast when new, but slows down without frequent back flushing. The bags are pretty stout and I don't worry about puncturing the dirty side. The clean side could be anything (water bottle, vapur bottle, nalgene etc.). It's a nice little filter & packs small and light. Just can't freeze 'em.

Yes, I'm looking at the platy 2.0. Thanks for the review fly rodder. I'm wondering if I can make the clean water tank my hydration system I put In my pack

Yeah, I don't see why not. I think you just remove the bite valve and plug the filter tubing in - it comes with a plastic coupler. I haven't done it, but I just prefer a water bottle.

I think they mention it in the FAQ at the cascade designs website.

I have the Platypus and it works great. No problems with it: super fast, clean water, and you can store quite a bit of water at camp with just the bags. I used one filter for two seasons, ran water for four people for a week both times no problem. The first year supply of water was questionable. Tons of cattle in the area, and it turns out there was a dead one upstream not too far from the crick. Still tasted great and nobody got sick. Just replaced the filter this year to be safe. You certainly could put the clean water part in your pack, just order a bite valve or take one off a different bladder and it should work great. I personally leave the whole system at camp and just use a water bottle, not a huge fan of bladders while hunting. They are nice for hiking in or out though.

Also, the only negative I can see is that it can't freeze, if it's super cold, put it in the sleeping bag with you. Back flush before each use to clear air and other particles for maximum flow.

I have used it both ways. To fill the bladder in my pack and hung up in camp to fill nalgenes, cooking pots and whatever. I'm very happy with the way it works. They can freeze so need to be in the tent at night.

Been using the Katadyn for years. It's with me on 90% of my hunts, we hang it from our spotting scope tripods while at camp. Once filled you don't have to get water but every couple days. Have never had a problem with it plugging up either.

I'm the same, the Base Camp always comes with on fly in, float trips or the ponies. I don't use it on the back pack hunts and the only issue I have ever had is freezing, I just put the filter in a zip lock and put it in the fart sack with me.

This is the filter system im leaning towards also. I like the fact it has the shut off valve too, more versatile set up. The only other negative I see is that you have to have a decent water source to start with. meaning, there has to be a running river, or decent depth to fill the dirty bag. This might be a downside to a pump system where you can put a tube into a smaller water source and pump out what you need through the hose.

But, Im going to get the katadyn for me, and the hikerpro (pump style) for my son. This way, we have both types with us, and water tablets for back up too.

I used the platty bottle kit for a week trip in Idaho this fall. After seeing my hunting partners standing in the creek pumping while I could fill up and filter on dry ground I was pleased with my choice. As others mentioned above, frequent back flushing is required or it would slow down considerably.

Not much difference between the Platypus Grav Works, MSR Auto-Flow, or Sawyer mini, they all use the same basic filter just with different ends. I've had all three, not much difference in performance.

I'm using the Sawyer Mini right now as the ends are more multi function, particularly the straw feature. I use it w/ a wide assortment of bladders ranging from Platy's to Hydrostorm, 10L Dromedary to an empty 2L soda bottle (although I do find I have to leave the cap loose to evacuate air).
