Has anybody here gone and tried the Grizzlystik 650 setup for elk. What did u think of it? I'm thinking of getting the 650 grain arrow test pack. Grizzlystik will refund the price of the test pack from a dozen arrows if u buy in thirty days. The Grizzlystik website is impressive. Alot of elk pics. I'm wondering what everyone thinks of Dr Ashbys work with 19 percent FOC and single bevel broadheads 650 grains total weight? I called and talked to them and they say i wont notice a difference to thirty yards. I've only shot one bull elk (5x5) in my life. Single lung shot at 32 yards, ran sixty or so yards into other hunters to be shot again and tagged by them, same thing happened to a friend who shot a cow last year. Looked like a good shot. Waited an hour after he shot to track the blood trail only to go two hundred yards to hunters who shot it again and tagged it. Cant handle the lows of losing an animal again. If i was rifle hunting i would go get a 338 mag or something to drop a bull in its tracks. Whats the equivalent in archery. I shoot a Diamond Deploy Sb 70 lb bow, 28.5 draw, Spot hogg fast eddie jr sight, crossover telescoping stabilizer with back bar, tightspot quiver, winners choice string. I was shooting a Easton 5mm FMJ arrow with a 125 grain montec g-5 broadhead,11 percent FOC, total weight 496 grains. HELP PLEASE What arrow/broadhead combo would u recommend I shoot this year for elk. Thank u for your time.

Wow, you shot TWO animals that other hunters put down and BOTH times the other hunters tagged the animal? I can't even fathom doing that to another hunter...and what kind of satisfaction do you get out of shooting a dying animal? Strong potential for violence on the mountain in that kind of situation!

As to your question: I listened to Ashby on the Kifaru podcast and loved listening to him! I'm not sold on the extreme FOC aspects of the setup, but what he was saying about 650 grains being the bone-breaking threshold was pretty convincing. The anecdotal stuff I've heard about single-bevel broadheads is also pretty convincing in my opinion. I think I'll be building and trying out some arrows in the 650 range for hunting next year and I think I'll try out some single-bevel heads.

I was guiding a client on the Kaibab and he hit a really, really good 3x3 that ducked into the junipers and around a little knob. We heard two shots on the other side. When we got there, three guys were standing over the buck. They got ugly about the whole thing. I told my client to just let them have the buck, because eventually we'd find another one. But I'll tell you, those guys were ready to physically get into it (lol). Crazy!

I'm not sure why I'm so surprised to hear this is an actual problem...people have no shame!

That arrow will be fine. It's all about shot placement. I've never cared for Montecs, but on the budget side a Magnus Buzzcut would work very well with that arrow. Plenty of penetration with a behind the shoulder shot.

I would be much more concerned about the areas I chose to elk hunt over my arrow weight!

You certainly opened a can of works with that question. You will likely catch some flak. I love heavy FOC arrows and would recommend them, but for maybe not reasons that immediately come to mind.
1st My Hoyt bow would not group smaller than a pie plate with the lighter 400ish gr arrows, so I went to heavier heads and ultimately heavy arrow. 2nd reason is that the arrow is so much quieter in flight at slower speeds.
3rd bow is so much quieter.
4th turned out to be the ridiculous penetration through bone or whatever else that gets in way for that matter.

GS are really expensive, but in grand scheme of things, if animal runs off because you only managed to punch halfway through, then would have cost then been justified?

For some reason this light vs hvy arrow really stirs up some of members on here, IDK why but it seems too. Try them I'll bet you like them and never look back.

I've never seen anyone get that stirred up on here over heavy versus light, but the weight of the arrow is only one part of the equation. There are women that shoot light draw bows and light arrows (in comparison) and get passthroughs on elk. Put together the best arrow/BH combo you can, make sure it's tuned extremely well, make sure you're accurate as heck with it, and the elk will fall with a good shot.

Off topic but had the "stealing an animal" thing happend to my buddy last year on a rifle hunt. He made a perfect 350 yard shot and was waiting for the elk to fall - it was just standing there bleeding out - and two other hunters came down from above and put two non leathal shots in him and then claimed him. We could not believe it. Should start another post about this. sorry about the off topic but I have never heard of it happening before.

I built/tested multiple high foc arrows this year. Tried Black Eagle, Easton, GT, and Victorys. The Victorys definitely tuned better and recovered from archers paradox faster with high foc. As far as the not noticing a difference from 450 to 650 out to 30, not true. I had a full pin gap drop plus a little more. The 650s were a bit much and I lost my 60yrd pin in process with my sight. So I backed off to 600 and didn't notice a difference in penetration. The spine for Grizz ended up being too stiff with the 240s for the specs I wanted, 65#, 30.5" draw. So I searched for a different Victory arrow and settled on Vap TKO 300s, 28" c2c, with Stainless in/outs(95gr) and 200g single bevels. Finished at 589gr and 21% foc. They flew the best for my setup without having to change poundage and having decent arrow length still. It's going to be different for everyone, but once I got things dialed I've never have had a better flying arrow. My groups got considerably better at longer ranges, shoot amazing in wind, and still have awesome momentum at long range but I spent a lot more time tuning my arrows. The TKOs also ended being half the price of the Grizz. I suggest an arrow with 550 minimum and 650 max, with as high foc as you can get while still maintaining perfect arrow flight.
