This will be the first year that I have been to Colorado to hunt. Two of us will be making a back packing trip in muzzle loading season. We both drew cow tags. We plan on spending a full day, Thursday before season opens, packing in before setting up camp. Guess it will depend how rough the country is as how far we get back in. Would like to get away from as many people as possible. Since we are from West Virginia, pre season scouting is pretty tough. Can anyone give me any areas to consider? Have spent some time looking at topo maps. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Really looking forward to the experience.

My experience in #43 is alot of private property, take a GPS with hunt maps...most of the private is not marked or fenced. If you can get away from the roads2-3 miles you will do ok, and be prepared for alot of hunters. There is alot of elk in the unit, find water, you will find the elk.

Thanks for the input. We are looking at Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Possibly around the Snowmass Creek area.

Great area, some huge bulls have come out of there, there are at least 2 different outfitters up there, you might experience some "hazing" since their clients are paying BIG bucks. It is rugged country and lots of bears. Good luck!
