First time poster, long time reader!!

So I bought a nice little savage .300 win mag last year and replaced the Plastic Tupperware feeling stock (it wasn't the accustock) with a Hogue rubber overmold pillar bedded drop in stock. It felt great until I took it to the field to dial it in. As I put the gun in my shooting sticks and bipod, I noticed that the forearm had flex in it. I can actually pull the forend up to touch the free floating barrel. Obviously this could create some problems in the mountains if I rest my gun on a rock or bipod to shoot a bull and miss because the barrel contacts the forend! As such I am looking to spend up to $300-$350 for a good replacement stock. I would prefer a black synthetic stock, but I'm not afraid of a good walnut stock either. I've heard Bell & Carleson and Boyd..... but this isn't something I've done a lot of, so I'm asking you guys for some guidance. I don't want to bed the barrel, as it was designed to free float and I'd like to maintain that. (had a buddy suggest glass bedding it and I think i'll pass) Thanks for any help I can get!

I have several friends who use the Hogue stock with no problems at all and I've used them a ton on varmint rifles with no accuracy flaws in all sorts of contorted positions - IMO you're over thinking a nonexistent "problem" - if you are determined to "fix" it just send it to MPI stocks in Portland and have them put it in an ultralight ...... Great company who makes a great stock

You very well could be right. I have always used a walnut stock Savage 110 30-06.... so maybe I'm just used to that rigidity and the flex in the Hogue makes me nervous. I'll spend some more time on the range putting it through it's paces, but it still makes me a bit nervous.

MPI looks really nice! but I didn't see a ultra light option? just featherweight and micro-light?

Coop - can the boyds take a beating? I can be hard on stocks at times. I do like the advantages of a laminate stock in theory.

From what I can tell so far yeah it is just going to get scratched up and dinged like any wood stock.. I did the painted laminate in the black.. I actually had plans of repainting mine after bedding it so I sanded it down and got lazy and left it and just cleared it.. I figure the dents, scratches and what not that will happen to it just adds to the character.. Haha. I will be doing marine Tex on it for extra grip in the near future..

Does your barrel still free float, or did you bed the barrel? I would like to keep mine free floating.

Yes sir, I have a 116 with a B&C Medalist Classic Checkerd and love it! See this thread as I have a pretty detailed explanation to the instalation, along with pics:

Let me know if you have any questions and i'm happy to give you some info!

Edit to add post 15 is where the information from me starts.

riley - thank you for the excellent info. I tried to search for a drop mag model and I can't find one, so looks like i'll need to switch to a bling mag if I want a B&C

That's correct you will have to convert to blind mag. You can use the factory magazine and remove the bottom plate. Easy enough to do

laminated stocks are the strongest of them all I believe - Bell & Carlson are a good compromise between weight and strength - MPI are in the Manners/McMillan price range but they are the original lightweight stock pioneer, Doc and a partner started back in the 80's in a garage in St John's, Portland and Doc's daughter is doing a remarkable job of carrying on ......

I put this Boyds laminate on a gun for my dad. Pillar bedded and painted it. I like the boyds pro varmint stock.
