Working on finally getting around to putting together a Southeast Whitetail rifle. I do a lot of stalks along with hang-and-hunts from climbers, saddles and lock-ons. Occasionally I will sit a box blind, but that is not very often.
Want something that is light, nimble, easy to carry and manageable recoil. Most hikes are in the 1-3mi range over various elevation carrying additional equipment so nothing too major.
Budget - Would like to stay under 4k (minus the optic)
Game - Whitetail
Ammo - Factory Ammo (do not reload)
Avg Hunting Range <400yds
Caliber - .308/7-08/6.5prc
Magazine - Prefer hinged floor plate (never had a detachable)
Bolt - Prefer 70 vs 90 degree bolt but not set in stone
Barrel - Either cut factory or prefit 16-18" (short barrel to keep OAL w/suppressor under 21-24")
Trigger - Triggertech Special or equivalent
Suppressed (Unknown at the moment. Thinking Dead Air Ti)
Optic - Schmidt Bender T96 3-12x54 (may change this, but its my go to for low light hunting)
My gut tells me to just buy either a Tikka CTR SS or Begara Barreled Action, chop/thread it and throw one of them in a HNT 26 or Peak 44 Stock. After that I go down the rabbit hole of a full blown build.
Any and all recommendations are welcome as all my experience has been with the same Model 70 FWT 30-06 for the last 10 years. Prior to that I was bow only.
