Hi everyone, im looking for some advice on buying my first trad bow hunting setup. My main concern is that the bow fits me correctly. My next concern is that I want it to be capable of killing elk and deer. I don’t have a strong opinion as far as longbow vs recurve. I just want to get started.

Here’s what I’m shooting now for my compound hunting setup:

*2005 Hoyt Ultratec bow with 26.5” draw length and 50lb draw weight (yes I’ve been hunting with it since 2005- bought it brand new back in the day. Ive taken 49 whitetails, 3 mule deer, 3 elk, and one pronghorn with it).

*Easton Axis 5mm 500 spine arrows

*G5 montec broadheads or old school striker broadheads - not the new strikers though- they aren’t as good

*Carter Atention II back tension release

Welcome to the Dark Side...

Without knowing your budget, id reccomend the following. Sounds like you are on the shorter end of the drawlengths chart so my reccomendations are based on that.

17" Hoyt Satori or Tradtech Riser.
Medium Black Max ILF limbs in the 35# range.
Buy some medium length 50# limbs once you are comfortable shooting the lighter weight. If you think its something you want to stick with, splurge on a decent set when you go up to 50#.

All ILF limbs will fit the Satori riser or Tradtech riser.

50# recurve will kill you anything in North America. Error on an arrow recipe that gets you above 500 grains. Any well respected cut on contact two blade or two blade with bleeders will work for you.

I reccomend Day Six arrows and Broadheads. Day Six arrows are heavy for their spine and will help you get above 500 grains.

You will have to decide if you want to shoot a glove or a tab, I prefer a tab. Safari Tough three under tab is what ive shot for a decade and never wore one out.

I have a first generation Dalaa with two sets of original limbs plus a couple sets I’ve converted from ILF to DAS, but in all honesty if I really wanted to get a setup that will satisfy me forever I’d get a Bear Kodiak TD in either the mag or wood riser, build up
arrows that work with your bow & tune and go with it. I think the Dalaa and some other modern risers are very easy to tune and be accurate with, but I’ve never found a bow that is as smooth as a Kodiak TD, and it’s the bow you might always wished you’d tried. I’ve shot recurve for 60+ years and though my shooting is now limited, the Kodiak TD remains my favorite, and I’ve owned a couple of bows.

This is very true. My wife has an old Magnesium A and B riser, and im always impressed with how great of a bow they are. She killed a 370+ bull with her B riser.

With that said, ILF bows for someone just getting into the sport are such a good option. You can buy limbs for 100 bucks all the way to $1000s. Just gives a new archer so many options.

My very first bow was a Bear magnesium riser TD that I saved and saved as a kid to buy. For any NJ people, I bought it from Len Cardinale at Butts and Bows. Too bad I opted for the A riser which if I recall results in a 56” length. Which stacks at my adult full draw.

This is making me nostalgic. I need to go dig it out of my closet and take a few shots with it.

I recently decided to get back into recurves and bought a WNS setup. But that’s for target. Not hunting. For sure, ethical kills, I’ll stick with my compound.
