Adirondack Grouse

What part of the park are you looking at? Its mostly mature forest, and there is no logging on state land so no possibility of man-made early successional habitat. Theres grouse everywhere, just hard to find the concentration of birds you might find in different habitat. If you’re looking for public, you’ll have to find areas of state land that had been logged and transferred to state ownership much more recently, or areas of regenerating fields. Or target the fringe of wet areas you can find on satellite images. Or private land, although in several areas some of the best private is leased by a few guides. There is cover, but you’ll work to find it and theres nothing like the “just pull over and hunt your choice of popple cut” type stuff like you find across much of northern new england and the great lakes states. Its a hard place to bird hunt so not likely you’ll get real specific info. Not many folks travel to hunt there for a reason.

As said above, your best bet will be fringes of wet areas. Tough for sure, but rewarding when you can connect...

I have hunted up there in the past with the pup but you will have to c over alot of miles if strictly hunting public.I just started going up to Maine because its just a whole lot easier to get into good numbers.Having said that I do love hunting the dacks.PM if you want and ill let you know where I have hunted up there.

I’d go anywhere to be honest. Make a little trip out of it. Used to see them at camp as a kid when one of the paper companies logged. Been 20 years since they’ve logged and haven’t been back since so idk what it’s like. Thanks for the advice.

I’m thinking the same thing and to chase some bigger deer up there. Miss the camp I went to as a kid and want to get back into hunting the Adirondacks. Wish they’d log again
