I would love to get a custom rifle, but my wallet says other wise. Anyone here ever get their rifle accurized and if so can recommend a good company to do so? Also, are their any off the shelf rifles that are best to do this with?

I had my rem 700 300 win mag worked over and it makes a world of difference in making your stock gun shoot better. I'm not sure where in new York your from but Bobby Hart from Hart Rifles can fix you up right. You can check out his services at rwhart.com it helps for me since I'm local but I would recommend his work to anyone.

I did a trigger upgrade, glass bedded the action, free floated the barrel. To me those offer the most bang for the buck. Double pun~!

True the action face. Glass bed the action. Free float the barrel. And shoot handloads. Call Dave Bruno Precision Rifles in Dayton PA. He specializes in benchrest and ultralight hunting rifles. He is also a genious when it comes to tuning a rifle. And is more than willing to walk you through everything.

for 2 of my rem 700's, i changed out the stock to a full aluminum bedding block bell and carlson, bedded the action, free floated the barrels; and went to a timney trigger. they are both good shooters.

my T/C Dimension rifle, with 2 separate barrels, shoots 3 shots into 1/2" at 100y (.243 and .22-250). for 600ish bucks, hard to beat that accuracy with almost any custom costing way, way more.

i asked my gunsmith back in VA what he would do with my R700. he said unless i'm going full custom, just the stock/trigger is all he would do, as well as, have a smith ensure your muzzle/crown is perfect and perfectly concentric.

Aside from a trigger job You can spend a lot of money trying to make a rifle accurate but in my opinion if you have a mediocre barrel it might just be a waste of money.. If finding a good load for your rifle is a chore, you might be money ahead to just re barrel...

I highly recommend Hart Rifle Barrels. They worked over a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag for me putting on a new barrel. It shoots amazing now. It took almost a year, though. I put in a deposit to get in line and they called when they were ready for me to send the rifle. I was only without the rifle for a couple weeks.

Just for reference, they are not affiliated with RW Hart in PA. I know I had some confusion about that when I was looking.

RW Hart is one of the best in the business and has the reputation to back it up....

Triggers swaps, stock exchanges and bedding can all be done with a 10 minute you tube tutorial. "Accurizing" can mean different things but if I'm going to pay a 'smith to accurize I want him to jewel & true the bolt, and fix any headspace issues. If your rebarreling (I've only rebarreled one gun that wasn't an AR) I went by the rule of thumb and paid as much for the barrel blank as I did the rifle. Then had to have it cut, etc... trigger, stock, bedding, bolt work are all the easiest and least expensive to make an accurate gun a tack driver. Beyond that you're starting to look at big $$. Honestly with $350 ruger Americans shooting MOA in many cases, $500 tikkas loving every load you feed them, and $600 savages almost benchrest worthy.... the only reason to accurize a modern hunting rifle nowadays is nostalgia and respect for craftsmanship.... which aren't bad reasons. Just trying to say out of the box economy guns you can buy at Walmart are accurate as hell now, there's no reason to shoot a lukewarm accurate gun.

As far as barrels go shilen, lilja, hart, etc... pick one. Like boots and optics, price will reflect the quality.

I believe Hart Rifle Barrels only does barrel work. Which is why i recommended getting the Accurizing from RW Hart as Bobby provides all encompassing gun smithing to optimize Long Range Shooting. Lastly, while they are not affiliated they are relatives.

LRI does a variety of accurizing tiers depending on what you want to spend (and assuming you have a rem 700 action). The guys over at snipers hide speak highly of chad and his work. Check the website for prices for "Snipers hide group buy".

Also, I would agree that I feel you're going to go through the expense of tearing into the receiver you might as well go for a new barrel. I'd guess $1k for parts and labor if you dont touch the stock (350 barrel, 300 chamber-cut-crown, 400 +\- truing receiver).

from Harts ad.

Installing barrel on your action
Includes price of barrel, squaring action and lapping lugs. Standard Bolt Action, Anschutz, Single Shot, Ruger 10-22 Drop-in… Learn More

you can get the stock work done later. or get the stock done first and then get a barrel.

most smiths that install the barrel will do some action work to make sure the barrel is good to go.

i have been through the Hart factory and watched them make a couple of barrels. the button rifled barrels are more than good enough for all but the top competitions.

They do builds too. They did the blueprinting and barrel replacement for my rifle.

"We have a complete gunsmithing shop and can rebarrel your action, with a Hart barrel, chamber, lap the lugs, square the action, crown, and contour in many calibers"

Look up whose rifles and barrels are setting the short and long range bench rest world records. You won't see LRI, GAP, or any of the other handful of shops crammed down your throat over on Snipershide. Do your own research. Theres plenty of good gunsmiths out there that do outstanding work at reasonable rates.

I'm always looking for an outstanding smith at reasonable rates, who all do you have in mind?
