A2 flash hiders as thread protectors : timing

I have been using A2 flash hiders as thread protectors for a while now. I am getting fed up with the fiddley little shims to time them. Has anyone faced them in a lather to get them to properly time? Any suggestions? Anything to watch out for?

If you have access to a lathe you could do that. If you don't you could even take a flat stone to them. Would be slower but it'll get you there
