So I blast off in a week and a couple days for an archery hunt the first week+ of September. Ive been working out, lifting, hiking with a heavy pack, etc.....Now Im wondering if I should keep up the routine (Im leaning this way), or back it off some. I am hydrating as much as possible to prepare for high altitude.....thoughts?

If you are where you need to be, I would back it off a bit, focus on sleep and diet, and decrease your chances of getting hurt.

I always end up not getting any sleep the days leading up because I am tying up loose ends, commitments at home, etc, and then I do the dreaded "pack everything" thing because I'm not 100% organized.

Also, spend some extra time with the family if you have one, do something special for/with them. You're going to miss them when you're gone.

I'm in the same situation, leave in 11 days (not that I'm counting). I plan to keep at it, although a little reduced, this week and use next week for a taper/recovery week. 34 hours of driving will also help in the recovery, maybe.

My dad and I leave next week and ive still been going to the gym and working out just with less intensity. I've been taking it kinda easy. I've also been trying to get as much rest as I can.I definitely agree with making time for the family. I took an extra day off of work so I can have a family fun day with my wife and kids before I leave.

I leave in less than 2 weeks. I'm going to keep hitting it hard at crossfit this week. Then really go lite weight high cardio for half of next week and take a few days off. I would hate to get injured somehow before my hunt.

I'm actually a bit ahead for the first time ever - 90% load plan confirmed and hiked around a bit, 'good enough' broadhead tune that I still have time to refine, good start on map scouting a new area, etc. Still need to set up a new Mountainsmith shelter but should be simple, need to refletch and spin test few arrows, but with 15 days until SP I'm WAY ahead of usual and won't end up with the usual "pack everything" panic.

14 days out I seriously taper down, and 7 days out, I do nothing. I do this for 2 reasons, one is I don't want to injure myself so close to the hunt, with no time to recover, and secondly, my motivation has dropped to zero...I.just.need.to.hunt

I didn't even get my broad heads glued on until today. For some reason I'm am way more calm heading into this season than years past. I feel like taking my time and getting in such a hurry.

I was in the best shape of my life 2 days ago, then I tweaked my knee yesterday screwing around playing with my dog in the yard. My plan at this point is a pro athlete style rehab and staying limber as possible. I had a moment of major panic when it happened but today I feel good.

I have not been shooting my best lately, but I have done this long enough and still have the results to support the confidence that I will not botch any shot that I know I can make, which are the only shots I will take.

I have tested and am confident in my gear, anything at this point is a tweak, not a change.

I know more about elk habits and life in general than I ever have and less than I ever will.

Come October, I may feel like a hero or an idiot but I will have one less September to look forward to, the month I live for.
