Those rubber gaskets get brittle and shrink. I recently replaced them on my 05 Sequoia. The bolts were so loose I probably could have taken them out without a ratchet.

Early gen had the 4.7L engine. The torque specs on them are very light, but if they leak you smell it in the cab.

I've got a 5.7 with the cam tower leak. Apparently that is a sealant issue. It's not really leaking much, just enough to get a whiff of it standing by the truck. I'm just keeping an eye on it since the repair is mega bucks to pull the cam towers and seal everything up.

But not while engine and bolts are hot. They'll snap off.

Also, check your heater Ts if the Tundra has them. Same engine in my five Land Cruiser 4.7s have them.

The lower rear driver side. Kept them tight since then and good to go. This was a long time ago that I found this issue, And it amazes me how quick they get loose.

Copy. My valve covers are leaking and leaking im getting that burning smell.

Dude I just checked mine and most were finger tight at best. Thank you for mentioning this!

they are the bolts that hold on the cover that the spark plugs go into.

damn, just went and check and i got some oil leakage. damn, glad someone brought this up! loks like they are getting tightened tomorrow!

I had the cam tower leak. Noticed it at 5k miles (the smell, but no visible signs). once the warranty ran out it started visibly leaking oil. Toyota honored it as i had been reporting the smell for multiple visits. I think the bill would've been $4k or so to repair.

I should probably check our Sequoia. Just had all new struts and shocks installed. Picking up tomorrow and will check these.

Anyone know the torque spec for them?

Mine have never been loose but I do have problems with my spark plugs getting loose. I had one that was backed out all the way.

Just tightened mine up. Some were so loose you could have removed them by hand!

I had an 03 for over a decade until last winter, and both me and the local shop were always perplexed at small oil spots on driveway and oil ‘inside‘ the skid plates.. Wish I’d read this years ago. Good PSA!
