With the TE17W seemingly impossible to find has anyone slapped a TE14WD on a 774/773? I see what looks like this option on used scopes from japan ebay but there is no visible SNs to confirm. Would love to try a 30x wide angle scope.

I could be wrong but the TE14wd is for the older 664m. Maybe there is an adapter. The fixed power eyepiece for the 774 is the te80xw.

The te14wd really made the 664m shine. I've been curious about the te80xw 35x in the 774 but have no experience with it.

The TE-17W is still out there, but Google doesn't like to display it in search results, probably because the TE-14WD is more common (same thing for TE-10Z vs TE-9z). The TE-14WD will not work with a 774. As the previous poster mentioned, Kowa replaced the discontinued TE-17W with the TE-80XW.

That said, I purchased a TE-17W from a gentleman here on Rokslide and have zero complaints using it with my 774. I am looking to upgrade to a TE-11WZ simply to get that extra reach, but the reality is that the 30x will give you a wider apparent FOV than the 11WZ unless the latter is on its mac zoom setting. Clarity is phenomenal. Because it's on a 774, you don't have the pure fluorite crystal and so about two thirds out you'll get some very minor CA, but that's not the eyepiece's fault. I'd just keep looking.
