So based on my research the good ole 45/70 is still plenty potent for elk when applicable ranges are used. From what I have read that the 400/405 sp is the gold standard and that pretty much anything 350 and up is acceptable.
My question is how does the group think how the Federal Hammerdown 300 gr load would work for elk? I know they are a softer bonded bullet, very similar to the fusion 300 gr. What I haven't been able to find are any 1st hand experiences for using either the Hammerdown or fusion loads for elk. Would any of you have any reservations about using this load on elk within 200yrds? I think I'd be fine but would like to hear what some more experienced 45/70 shooters have to say.

The rifle that I'd be using is one of the new Marlin 1895 SBLs and short of this rifle my 45/70 experience is nada.

These are the rounds....
