I was in 43 last year. Oak brush and aspen up to 9500 ft or so. Pines from there to timber line. Pic was taken about 11k or so.

Bulls will be in thick timber around water. We found sign about 10k, but I guess this depends on a lot of factors.

Have fun! Colorado in September is my absolute favorite.

Pictures like that make me want to take up bowhunting elk.

No oak brush in 45 and I don't recall any in 444, but I suppose there could be some down really low.

I live in 43 and lived in 444 for 7 or 8 years. 444 is a pretty sprawling unit and there is plenty of scrub-oak and sage..... It really depends on what zones you want to hunt. There isn't really too much above timberline to speak of. Mixed aspen and dark timber above the oak and sage elevations. If it was me, I'd stay away from the Carbondale/Hwy 82 side of the unit because it will get the most pressure.

Good luck!
