338 Federal loads

I hate to be that guy and believe me, I get the allure of the 338 federal. But what is it going to do for you that your 7-08 in stock form or a 308 won’t do? No critter will ever know the difference

I have shot 10-15 deer with the 308 and even more with the 7mm08 too. Most run a short distance then expire. With the 338Fed, every deer but one (it was a poor hit) dropped at the shot. I normally shoot 5-6 deer each year so my sample size with the 338 is mid 40s. It doesn’t make sense but that is my experience.

Finally got back home to look at my loading notes. I get 2510 with a 21" barrel. I use H322 and CCI LR primers. The load is below max but is close. I could probably get another 20-50fps but it has good accuracy currently. I am working up loads with them for my second 338Fed with the 185 Fusions and TTSX.

Function tested the AR10 338Fed with the 185s using necked up LC LR brass and 2000MR. Alliance website shows 52 grains for the 200 grains. 50 to 52 grains ran in the gas gun with 4 o'clock ejection. 52 grains without a drop tube is way into the neck.

Next time out, will test for precision.

On a side note with 2000MR, out of my double lugged gas guns I launched the 168 Hybrids at 2800 for the 1K NRA marches.
