I wish I was more of an expert but I'm not.. I've tried to do as much reaserch as possible. I'm going to be ordering a couple new longer range semi customs guns. One is a 300wm. Don't currently reload but may down the road as I have some friends who are really into it. Plan to attempt to shoot factory Berger 215 which have a coal of 3.600 I believe. Not sure if that will fit in mag without having an extended one... also could single feed those if they shoot amazing for longer range hunting. could get copper creek 215 which are 3.400. If those don't shoot will try something else. Hornady 212-200, nosler etc and those will be more Saami specs. So my question is would you keep with saami zero freebore or use the .187 reamer which the builder has. I hope I explained that ok and sorta correct...
Thanks again for all the help!

If you are having a semi custom built by a smith I would have him install a Wyatts box then you won't have to worry about the COAL. Shooting a 300 wm with the 215 at 3.4 coal kind of neuters it. Even 3.6 has the bullet deeper than it should be from the research I've done on it.

I am helping my brother make this exact decision at the moment.

I dont know what kind of rifle you have but a Remington 700 mag length is 3.69". Basically we have to come to the conclusion if you are going to run the Saami reamer, the 215's should mag feed. If you are going with the longer .187 freebore you are going to need the extended magazine to utilize it. If you are having to seat the 215's deeper to fit the magazine that longer reamer does you no good.

Personal opinion....if Im having a Wyatts installed I want to use it all. 300 RUM @ 4.00

Thanks for the info so far.

I kinda figured 3.6 is as short as I would want to go and that's still pushing it.

The bottom metal is remington 700 based...
Maybe i should just stick with the saami specks? Tuff call. I believe running the Wyatt's box has some trade offs with the ejector set up they have. Not positive though

Choose your mag length and bullet....have your smith throat it to length. Lots and lots of 300's swinging 215's out there.

There are different length 700 long mag boxes but the ones I have had have been 3.7" inside. The Factory Berger 215 ammo shoots well in the SAAMI chambers I have seen it shoot in. I have also developed loads for a SAAMI 300WM chamber and did not find it greatly different than my custom reamer. If you plan on shooting the Berger ammo I would not worry about getting crazy with a bunch of custom specs.

Most of what I have read makes me think the the Berger 215 ammo shoots out of saami chamber well. Some say it was to tight to the lands... so thats my only concern. not sure exactly what the new bergers are measuring compared to the older ABM stuff. I believe the ABM was 3.600 OAL and I believe Jeff brozovich was measuring it 2.83 ish to the ogive. I read one post on the new ones saying almost the same so maybe they haven't changed? If Berger stuff shoots well I probably won't reload. This will be mainly a hunting rifle and probably see minor range time as I have other rifles for that. The convenience of ordering a box or two is hard to pass up. Maybe I'm looking to far into it but that's my personality... I easily stress over making the "right" decision.
Thanks everyone for the help!

Thanks a bunch! The build/builder I'm looking at says he's seen plenty of people shooting the "factory" 215's with great results but he does have a .187 reamer for the heavies if I want that but like you and others have pointed out that may be pointless if I don't go with an extended mag box. Which is an option if I want. Just a little more money. I guess Just wasn't sure if either were something I should do.
