Hello all
I’m brand new to reloading. I have a new Hornady press and kit, a keen interest, and most importantly 2 mentors.
I planning to start by working up a load for my Tikka .300 Win Mag.
I have been shooting factory Barnes 180 TTSX. My rifle seems to like this round, and I like the monos. So I’d like to stick w the 180 TTSX for now.

Anyone have a powder recommendation for this combo?

I’m sure I’ll have lots more questions as I begin this journey so thank you in advance!

Try this recipe:

74 grains Reloader 22
Nosler 180 grain Accubond
215 primers
3.417 OAL

You will obviously have to play around with the OAL but start there. This is a recipe that has worked for me and my gunsmith for almost every 300 win mag I’ve shot. My Christensen Arms Ridgeline is shooting .327” at 100. I can consistently get a .4-.5 group.

Wow thank you for the quick replies!
Looks like I have a couple powders to think about. We’ll see what I can find in stock at our only powder supplier in town.
Anyone reloading w the Barnes TTSX 180 gr?

I loaded for a friends 300WM with the Barnes TTSX 180's. He bought 7828 I believe. I can't remember the load data but I can tell you that every bullet through the wide variety of powder charges landed in the same group. It was pretty impressive and easy to figure out. His gun was a ruger 77. My advise is get some Barnes data out of their book or online and pick a proven powder. You should not have a problem with this bullet and a Tikka rifle. Good luck.

Barnes has reloading data online in case you cannot find a book. Just remember your 180’s are on the stability edge for the slow twist of the Tikka barrels depending on your altitude.

I do not load the 180’s but I do load the 175 LRX for my Tikka T3. Powder of choice currently is ramshot magnum.

I load for mag length so I have never been able to run them long enough to get close to the lands.

One note with the long rounds and the deep seating needed to fit the Tikka mags you may end up in compressed load territory. A lot of more experienced guys recommend different methods to settle the powder. Electric tooth brush, drop tube etc. worth some research. It has helped with me Consistency.

Good luck and welcome to your new rabbit hole.

I use the 178 for ELD-X.

66.5 gr IMR 4451
Win mag LR primer
COAL 3.359 (just fits the Tikka mag)

Well under 1moa, with the limiting factor being my shooting skills 😂

Lots of powders that will work.
Really tough to beat 4831sc for a hunting load in this Bullet weight. Temp insentive and pretty easy to work with. It isn’t a guarantee but it’s where I would start.

Lots of people use and like that hunting bullet. If you like it and it doesn't demonstrate and terminal performance issues for you, then it's a winner. I worked with the older Barnes in a 200 gr. projectile and got the best performance in that weight bullet with RL-19 but I had to push it to hard to find accuracy. Milling the groves may well have eliminated that issue so that powder may still be a viable choice. In reality, there's to many great powders to choose from. I'm fond of 7828 SC, but that's just one of many. Pick a few and experiment.

As you've seen here by all of the powders recommended, the .300 WM is a great cartridge. I love the .30's and have several in WSM, WM and RUM. My favorite of all of the .30's is the Win Mag. The old stand by for 180 grain bullets has always been IMR 4350 and out of my 26" barreled Cooper using it, I'm getting 3140fps with 175gr Bergers along with consistent less than 1/2" groups. (only limit seems to be the shooter!) I want to use the TTSX but I haven't been able to get them to group well. I have had good results also with RL19 - 22- 25 & 26.... H4831SC & H1000. (The Short Mags seem to really like WW760.) I have tipped over animals with the Bergers, Hornady SST's, Nosler Partitions and Ballistic Tips, Sierra Game Kings & Speer Grand Slams.
So have fun.

74.5 grains H1000 and Berger 215 hybrids CCI 250 large mag primers. I'm only getting 2780fps. 77 grains shot better but had super are bolt lift.

77.5 grains of H1000 with 215 grain Berger hybrids with Norma brass and CCI250 primers. I am getting 2850 FPS out of a Rem 700 long range, no bolt lift, All actions and brass are different , so start at around 74 grains. They shoot awesome!

@kmbrewcrew Have you hunted with the 178 ELD X yet? If so did you have good results of penetration and expansion? I'm looking to start loading some of these up in my 308 and possibly a 300 WM if I get one.

Well I’ve finally gotten around to load up a few rounds.
I’m loading 180 TTSX’s on top of IMR 4350. I have gone from 65-68.5 gns in .5 gn incriminates. W Winchester MLR primers.

So far VERY DISAPPOINTING groups. Nothing better than about a 3.5 inch group at 100yrds.

Tomorrow I’ll load up some 69 and 69.3 gn loads. 69.3 is the Barnes max rec so I hope they tighten up quick.

Try some RL22. Always been a great powder for the 300 Win Mags I’ve loaded for with 180-190 gr bullets.

I shoot the 180 ttsx with 4831sc and Winchester Magnum primers and have exceptional accuracy. They chrono at 2950 fps and I can consistently get 2 inch groups at 500. I did have to modify the magazine on my Browning A-Bolt to fit the rounds as I had to get the bullet just about to the lands to get the performance I am looking for. The closest I could get to the lands without modifying the magazine was almost 1/4 inch and I couldn't get the rounds to shoot well at all until I lengthened them out.
