Considering doing a custom 300 Norma build this year. Looking for advice on that load, what you would consider a good action, length of barrel and realistic targeted weight (naked and scoped)? Seems like a great round ballistically speaking but not much information can I find. Want to be able to cover all North American game (except for maybe Grizz or Brown Bear).

Would also appreciate any feedback from those who considered this and ended up in another direction. Any insight is appreciated.

Budget?

It has very little extra case capacity over the 30 Nosler ADG brass. It does have Lapua brass but they typically do not feed as nice as smaller cartridges such as the Nosler. I personally would stay with the Nosler but I would guess you would be happy with either. I would stay with someone with experience with the cartridge for the build.

Weight can be the same as any long action magnum rifle. Many of the custom action makers can do lapua bolt face on their standard long actions. Specs depend on what kind of performance you want. Id want a 26" barrel and some weight to it if you have any desire to spot your shots. My norma doesn't go hunting much and weighs over 16 lbs with the scope. As far as covering all NA game, its plenty. I was carrying a 7 SAUM while targeting griz this year.

RFurman makes some good points above. You will want to use lapua or peterson brass rather than norma. One issue that some experience with this chambering is the brass case webb expanding after a couple firings and becoming sticky on extraction. I haven't looked into if anything has changed recently but I would want to discuss this with the builder and make sure the chamber dimension and sizing die dimensions mitigate any concerns with this issue. I do believe Lapua and Peterson brass will help compared to norma brass.

Fire up your check book and call Ryan Pierce. Seriously.

I had a 300 Norma in a Desert Tech bullpup and you're probably more interested in a conventional bolt action rifle. My advice is to go straight to Lapua brass and forget Peterson and Norma brass . This cartridge works best with H1000, Retumbo and N570 , all three are basically unobtainable in the U.S. at this time. It SHOULD be built on a 1.45" action and large tennon thread but many will argue that.

It will make about the same speed as a 300 RUM for 2x the money. Good luck with your decision.
