Hello - another east coast newbie here, planning to a 3 week DIY Elk bow hunt this year - 5 days out, 2 days back in town, and 5 days back out etc. etc

I have bought a Big Agnes HV UL 2 tent (great price on sale) with the foot print. This tent is mentioned in Public Land Elk Hunting by Mathew Dworak. It is light, under 3 lbs including the foot print. But I have also been reading about early season snow storms flattening light weight tents. Anyone have experience the BA HV UL 2 tent?

I would prefer to be able to handle whatever weather is thrown at us. Would I better off getting a light 4 season 2 person tent and if so which ones are recommended? I am not familiar with tarp tents but maybe that would be an option.

Many Thanks.

I have no experience with your tent but I suspect it's fine. I believe a 4 season tent is overkill for September elk in Colorado. I use tarps and a simple tipi with good results. I have never had either one collapse on me.

I bought a tipi from a fellow rokslider a couple years ago and have not looked back. I'll be buying something slightly smaller for quick solo scouting trips this summer, but the tipi has been money for two guys and gear early season or just me with the stove in cold weather.

Last year I used to Sierra designs flashlight second generation which is the fairly lightweight tent. We got about 6 to 8 inches of snow the night before opening morning and it held up just fine.I think I just go with the three season and save the weight.

I would guess that in 9 out of 10 seasons (or even more) it won't be an issue. In the last 10 years I've experienced more hail than snow during September high country hunts. However, it is very possible. The third week of September in 2006 the Flat Tops got three feet of snow. Haven't seen nor heard of anything even close to that anywhere in the state since in Sept.

I used the Big Agnes Copper Spur ul2 last year in Colorado while elk hunting. It kept me dry during several heavy thunderstorms. I also kept the top vent open and the condensation was kept to a minimum. I might switch to a floorless shelter next trip with more headroom but I don’t have anything bad to say about the BA.
