28 Nosler recoil

Question for the well informed with experience.

I have shot so many rifles and so many calibers. Have shot in competition as well as many different hunting situations. I shoot around 2500 rounds a year through long guns from a bench along with thousands more off hand and in hunting situations. Even though I have a "few" rifles in many different calibers, I use a .300 Win Mag for everything from woodchucks and coyotes to deer and elk. Recoil hasn't been a factor for me (ever since I recovered from shooting an unbraked .378 Weatherby as a "smart" 23 year old!).

My son in law just traded for a .28 Nosler in a Nosler rifle and asked me if I would sight it in for him. Cool. Always wanted to see what this new caliber would do. After the first shot, I thought that must be I hadn't settled in properly behind the rifle. BUT the second and third shots kicked just as hard. Don't get me wrong as the three shots landed in a 3/4" group, but wow, that rifle just wasn't any fun to shoot.

Am I getting soft in my old age or does the .28 Nosler just have a super wild recoil?

It's pretty stiff, especially in a light, unbraked rifle.

Too many variables left out to really comment. Stock design, Gun weight, muzzle break or not, ammo shooting etc.

I had an HS Precision Hunter 300 win mag in an SPL stock, 26” barrel that weighted within 5-6 ounces of my current 28 Nosler, also 26” barrel in the Proof Research Terminus stock. So both stocks had similar designs. Both had breaks. I shot custom loaded Berger 190 vld-h’s out of the 300 and Berger 195 EOLs out of the 28 Nosler. The WinMag was way more uncomfortable to shoot than the Nosler. Hence why I don’t have the Win Mag any more. Really the only design difference would have been the muzzle break, which IMO was a large part of the difference.

I have found my 28 Nosler to have less recoil than my 300 Norma AI, which actually is a little heavier in weight.

This is my opinion obviously , but you sound like you know your way around a rifle and have more time behind one than 90% of folks so I wouldn’t negate your assessment for us internet sleuths.

The only rifle that I own with a brake, is a CA custom (8 pounds with scope). None of my Win Mags have brakes, nor does the son-in-laws .28 Nosler.

Yeah my custom 9ish pound rifle shooting the 195s at over 3k fps feels like im shooting a 6.5 creed. I think some weight and a muzzy brake go a long ways. I’d imagine the rifle the OP shot was fairly lightweight.

Mine is very mild, but it has a suppressor which obviously aids with recoil. I’m sure It might bite with nothing on the muzzle. Ag composites stock. It doesn’t have as little recoil as a 223 but it’s pleasant to shoot IMO. I’ve shot it 50 times in a day with no issues. For me personally the brakes are what get me, just the noise I think.

weighs right at 10lbs. Which was the goal on larger magnums

28 nosler is the best. Have it love. put a salmon river solutions 5 port break on there and never look back.

My 28 Nosler with a break, at 10 lbs is so similar to my 6cm with a can at 8 lbs. The good thing about alt of powder in the 28 Nosler is that a break really cuts the recoil well.
