What has everyone with a 270 tried? I'm really interested in testing the Nosler LRAB in 150gr but it seems to be unavailable everywhere. The Berger Hinting VLD's seem to be available. For powder I have RL26 and 7828ssc to test.

What's everyone like and used. I would try the new Hornady eld-x if they made a 270 bullet in it. What I'm seeing is very generic offerings but a few decent higher BC options which are hard to find. Why do the mfg not mfg more of the high BC offerings, they seem to always be out of stock on these.

140 bergers, 140 accubonds and 140 ssts shoot good out of my Tikka 270. I haven't killed anything with them but they shoot great over IMR4831.

What twist barrel do you have?

I would like to try the new Hornadys too if they ever release a bullet in .277

I shoot both the 150 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip and the 150 gr. Nosler Partition. Both shoot well under 1 moa and kill. Here is a pic of my BT from this year. Dropped my largest muley this year in his tracks at 410 yards.

I'm in the process of deciding what caliber/rifle to buy and have done a lot of looking at the .270 with berger bullets. The applied ballistics calculator gives the best results with the 130gr classic hunter for both drop and drift out to 500 yds (didn't have the calculator go beyond that). The 150 might not stabilize in a 1:10 twist barrel.

150 Bergers will stabilize fine in a 1:10 twist, just don't like what they do to the meat surrounding the general area where they hit - 150 ABLR appear to stabilize in the 1:10 twist as well but I haven't had the chance to see what velocities can be achieved given the length, accuracy looks like it will be great though - Give Hornady a chance to develop other calibers and I'd bet they'll have a good .277 although 130 seems to be the "magic" number with the .270 - the 130 etip certainly does a good job on elk

I have a 1:10 twist in my Forbes, from everything I've read and mfg specs it will stabilize a 150gr. I really want to try the Nosler LRAB but looks like the Berger are all I can find.

There is a guy on 24hr pushing the Nosler LRAB over 3k with RL26 out of a 24" barrel.

in my son's 270 WSM I got 150 Bergers JUST to 3000 and man, was it an accurate load in his Tikka with a PacNor that John Noveske did for me a long while back

LRAB were accurate in my 270, but the BC is off by a mile. Litz had them at .543, IIRC. Never hunted with them, but the word on the street is they come to pieces. 140AB's are most likely a better bullets. I wish Hornady would get off their ass and make a 150 gr Eld-X. That might just be THE 270 bullet.

I was about to try some 150 ABLR's in the 270 WSM's when I found seating them the inline left an indented ring around the bullet just back from the tip - the Redding threaded bullet seater doesn't but it caused me pause to think about them some more and see what everyone else was experiencing - I realize that the long range hunting trend has put new and diverse demands on our bullets and maybe that is the way it will have to be, certain bullets for long range will "come apart" at shorter ranges - as least the bullet makers are trying to address this ....... It should not be much of an issue to aim for the heart/lungs at the 300-400 yard +/- arena or am I just being compromising ?

Nosler say's the ABLR is "best" at that distance. I can't say I have any intention of backing up. Biggest pisser is the overinflated BC. Noslers load data and BC numbers are generally off in my experience and nobody is twisting a 270 1:9.

Well I found some of the 150 LRAB. So we'll see how they do. I do have to load them .11 off the lands to cycle in the magazine.

Also going to try the 165gr matrix.

I'll start .02 off the lands to see what is most accurate. Not sure if I'll end up loading to mag length or not but I'll play around.

I shot one buck this year with the 130 gr Berger Classic Hunter in a 270WSM (chrono around 3125 which according to some posters is attainable with the 270 Win). Absolute devastation, but it's only a case study of one.

I did shoot them to 700 yards with sub MOA accuracy.

A little light reading. Don't let BC run your life. Wind is everything, but consider this:

7mm 162gr Amax (.625), 3,000 FPS = 13" drift at 500.
270 140gr BTSP (.486), 2940 FPS = 18" drift at 500.

Ok, so 5" difference. Looks "huge", but if you and I are side by side, we KNOW we've got 10 mph L/R, and our drops are perfect. Who do you think rings the bell?

We both do.

Now lets say, we "think" it's somewhere between 10 - 15 mph and hold the same. Now the 162 "advantage" is 2" drift. Who rings the bell?

We both do.

But how? Because for 15 mph the 162 guy is going to hold 20" and the 140 guy is going to hold 27". So if you're not reading right and holding right, it won't matter. So there is a margin for error, and yes higher BC shrinks it, but I don't think it's the be all, end all if you're reading things right.

And I've yet to meet anyone that can call a 5mph difference.

Oh, and the moral of the story: Proficiency at 400 is a warm and fuzzy place. BC really starts to rear it's head at 500. Beyond that is for someone else.

Looks like I'm getting lucky. I'll be testing the Nosler LRAB 150gr, Matrix 165gr VLD and the Berger 170gr EOL. Thanks to Rokslide for hooking me up with the Bergers. I'm really hoping I can get them to stabilize out of my 1:10 twist barrel, I've seen that many have been able to get the old Matrix 175 to stabilize.
