My new 300RUM barrel perfers the Berger 230gr . Velocity with N570 is 3130 fps clocked by Labradar.
What is everyones experience on Elk? Will this bullet work well Up close as well as past 800 yards?
Thanks.

You couldn’t pay me to use either the 230 OTM/30 Cal or 300OTM/338 cal on elk. It’ll work okay up close cause you have a good velocity but they have expansion issues at lower velocities. The 230 Hybrid Targets are a much better game bullet even though they’re still a “target” bullet. Same with the 300 Berger Elites.

Did they fail to expand at lower velocities? I open the tips to .8mm on all my Berger bullets... if you think that might help?

Honestly no I don’t. The VLD Berger’s are designed to have their nose collapse and fragment instead of peel back and expand like traditional bullets. That’s why you never see them mushroom but you find the bases and jackets fairly mangled if recovered.

I don’t believe the OTM’s are designed to expand at all.
