I’m debating a build using one of these calibers and I’m wanting to do it with a 18”-20” barrel for running with a can. I’ve read in the past that the 6.5saum barrel minimum is 24” but that might be hearsay idk. On the other hand I’ve seen a handful of guys building the 7saum in 18” barrels. I’m just a novice so please help me understand why it’s possible or why not

Can’t say about the 6.5, but look what gunwerks builds for the 7. All their guys running 18-20” barrels on that 7.

I was planning on using 120-140gr bullets so from research short action will work but I may do long action to go heavy if needed

Yep I have a 16" 6.5 saum and get 2925 with 144 bergers, and 2775 with the 156.
Both loads using RL26, my wife shoots the hell out of it suppressed.
I love it so much I decided to make a his and hers and put an 18" 7-300 wsm improved on my other tikka action, just started playing with it and I'm already at 2725 with 195's that gets me to 900 yards with 1800 fps impact velocity and over 1400 ft lbs.
Yeah I'm one of those guys who uses foot lbs as a metric for lethality

Stupid question, how is a 7-300 wsm different from a 7 wsm? I have a 270 wsm that I’ve been mulling around turning into a 7 wsm and can I use the same brass I already have and just resize?

The 7 wsm has the shoulder blown forward slightly giving it a few grains more capacity and a shorter neck.
They did that to prevent it from chambering in the other wsms.
If you do a straight 7-300 wsm it's as simple as running a .284 expander mandrel through your 270 cases and you're done.
I want to use adg 300 wsm brass so I decided I might as well size down to a false shoulder and blow it out to 45 degrees

Awesome feedback and thanks for the the input. I’m now looking at 16-18”. Might be the ticket.

I have a suppressed 18” 6.5 PRC and am getting 2725 with unknown munitions mayhem line with 156s.
Thanks for sharing, i appreciate it. I have an 18" on order for mine as well and plan to run the same load along with some lighter monos

👍 I had my 24” 6.5 SAUM chopped to 20” to make it handier with my suppressor. 3,000 with a 139/140 works great!

I have a 6.5 MAX with 20” Bartlein Carbon.
I run it Suppressed. No desire to go shorter.
You’ll want to consider the bullets & powder you want to run.
I’ve made adjustments to both in an effort to optimize my desired results.
