Hi all,

im working on a do it all mountain rifle and looking at building an Tikka 18" 7PRC. am i crazy for going that short? id like this rifle to be lightweight-ish, suppressed, and short for maneuverability. - i have a peak 44 bastian on order for the stock

Other than loss of velocity, what are the downsides?

Will unburned powder cause me any issues?

Is 18" long enough to stabilize a 175 ELDX?

any other thoughts?

No real issues if the suppressor is rated for it. Shorter is awesome. You will lose more speed, but it will be fine to most shooting distances.

The Unknown OG L would be a great can for it, if it is anything like the OG. Keep your rifle short.

I and others would suggest going to a smaller caliber. I ran a 26” 7 short mag for a couple years, then dropped down in caliber to keep the velocity. I don’t recommend going bigger than 6.5 PRC based on my results dropping to a 21” 25 cal short mag. The difference was nearly indistinguishable in performance between the 180 and 133 bergers.

If you want that, go for it. Just pick a durable suppressor (not the Scythe TI). The OG or Reaper would be great with that barrel length.

I would personally pick a smaller caliber, but nothing wrong with your choice.

I would not worry about an 18” 1:8” twist with the 175-grain ELDX.

You'll be fine and twist rate determines stability, not barrel length per se.

As long as youre comfortable with the velocity, you should be good. Although there could be better options outside of a 7mm.

Scythe TI was the supressor i was planning to use. why would this not be a good match?
Some have come apart. While the chance it happens to you is very very small, an 18” magnum only increases the odds.

The new Unknown Suppressors Raptor is designed to compete with it, and built and tested for durability.

There’s a thread on here with some owners having their cans blowing up. I have one and use it on a 22”7prc , a 20” wildcat 6.5/7prc , and a 20” 22 creed. It works great for me.

do you mean reaper? it says it has a 20" barrel restriction for LA mags

They are killing it with the “tone” on their suppressors.

I agree, of course.

Personally I would run 18” 7 PRC based on the testing they have done… I have more faith in printed over welded.

Yes. There is no issue whatsoever with a 7PRC at 18” with the Reaper. Remember the abuse check was 99 (IIRC) rounds as fast as possible through a 20” 300 PRC with zero damage to the can.

Would recommend something other than the scythe. I have one that came apart. It works okay but I prefer a few of my other cans over it. If budget is a concern, id recommend the enticer L or S depending on your desires. The Raptor is another good option but there is some benefit to the reflex design of the UM cans and the Raptor.
