Did a little test with my 300 WSM and some factory 2nds 178 gr ELD-x's that I bought from Midway for $24.00 a box and they shot pretty well. After watching the Hornady podcast number 50, decided to shoot a 15 shot group and see how everything works.

Group was shot from a Winchester Stainless 300 WSM bedded in a HS Precision Stock. 24" barrel, Timney Trigger and a Burris Veracity 3-15X50 scope and Witt Machine clamp on muzzlebrake. All Winchester brass annealed, trimmed and tumbled.

Some observations about the bullets and tolerances. A few had rings underneath the tip. The specs ranged in length quite a bit and the base to ogive had a bit of a spread as well. After listening to the podcast that seating depth really didn't have that much effect on performance in the loads they tested, wanted to test it with a proven load that has shot well in this gun since first doing load development. Didn't sort the bullets, just grabbed them out of the box and loaded them to length. The picture tells what happened.

I got some of those from Midway to try for my 300 wsm but haven’t had a chance to load them yet.
What are you getting for velocity with that load?

Couple things with the seconds….

I’ve had a few tips fall out. Not a huge deal, usually use those for velocity readings or glue them back in.

I did order some eldm seconds once for my Grendel. It doesn’t shoot the best but does ok. Was loading some one day and thought the bullets didn’t look right. I had 130s and 123s mixed. So they do need to be checked

Good to know. I checked a few but not all. Thanks for the heads up.

I used these to kill a 600lb nilgai not long ago and they worked well. There are probably better options, but I didn’t have time to work up other loads. Something that digs deeper on an animal that tough would be my suggestion. He died with a single heart/lung shot and 80 yard run.
