How far have you actually packed a moose?

Iv packed a few over the years. Furthest one was by myself with my dog 2km from the lake. Dad took a bull evening before fly out day lol, I packed moose while dad and the pilot ferried gear home. We did get 1 quarter out that evening, the next day was 4 trips for my dog and I, her taking...

    Moose Hunt Cartridge and Bullet

I wasn’t expecting to see a moose opening morning while taking my daughter to school. Long story short, I only had 1 round on me. I shot the bull, he went into the willows 20 yards and laid down until he expired. Stressful, yes totally. My gut ate me up in that couple minutes. Luckily he...

    Moose Hunt Cartridge and Bullet

Ime using the same bullet in 30 and 375 caliber and double lungs, expiry time has been faster for sure. Iv wondered the same thing. But also wondered how much meat loss one of the frag bullets would have left at the close distance? Definitely a trade off between them I think.

    Moose Hunt Cartridge and Bullet

Most my experience is with 30’s and 375’s but my last bull I took with my 6.5 prc with a 140gr accubond at 2975fps, shot was 40 yards broadside double lung. It was pushing 2 minutes before the bull expired, a hole through the lungs about 2” in diameter with the bullet under the hide on the off...

New walnut for an old classic

Thanks guys, I believe it will get checkered at some point, besides looking good I think the added grip is a big benefit. Those carbons look pretty nice in a walnut! 😉

New walnut for an old classic

I got one coat on now, I think it’s looking pretty not bad. I’ll get another one on in the next day or two and see how it looks then. Bear season is around the corner here and this one’s chomping at the bit to get packed and used.

New walnut for an old classic

I ended up giving it another soak with 50/50 tru oil and BLO then let dry. Next was wet sanding with 400 grit and the 50/50 mix. I made a few different shaped backers for the process First wet sanding complete. I left it a bit tacky and muddy to help with filling the pores on the next wet...

New walnut for an old classic

Iv been slacking here, but not at the bench! I’ll skip past the last of the shaping and detailing as it’s mostly unnoticeable in photos . I wanted to put a few through it before going on with the finishing, just in case. Iv never fired a .338wm before, my first shot was from standing, I was...

    First Aid, Who's Needed It?

Stuck my havalon through the meat of my shin breaking down a clients Billy on day 5 of 10 days. No real first aid supplies in camp. By day 11 when we flew out it was straight to the hospital and 4 days of IV antibiotics. What got me out was paper towel, electrical tape and not giving up on my...

    Your first centerfire rifle

I was a little spoiled in this regard. My grandad was a gunssmith/stock maker and built me a nice 6.5x55ai on a Mauser 96 and custom walnut stock when I was 6/7 years old. I took my first mountain goat with it when I was 8, then a mule deer when I was 11. It’s now been 33 years since that deer...

.270 Win enough for a Mountain Goat?

Iirc Iv been on 14 goat kills, only 1 that I remember a guy used a Berger, all the rest would be mono’s. Never did lose or come close to loosing a goat. .243 to .338 WM. The longest kill time though was by far the one where the fellow used a .338. The innards were gone like you’d expect, but...

How does your job prepare you for the mountain?

Shift millwright, 12 hour days 4/4/365, unscheduled down time isn’t an option. Our plant is 4 levels and built of stairs and ladders, add in a 40 pound tool bag plus parts. The job keeps me in good shape, but is also hard on the body. A mountain hunt is a cake walk compared to a day at work.

New walnut for an old classic

I got a lesson on declarator pads, my own stupidity looking back, it’s obvious that black insert was going to pop through. So I ordered another but with a black base, I think the black base will look better then without. So staring to take down thickness and straightening up lines...

    Tennis Elbow?

I just passed the 4 month mark off work from what the doctor calls, tennis elbow. A constant nagging stabbing pain in my elbow, I can manage it but work (shift millwright) says no work until it’s 100% gone away, so here I sit. Been seeing the physiotherapist, who thinks it’s stemming from a...

    Last three books you've read?

Undaunted courage I listened to on E book recently, it was quite interesting for a guy who doesn’t know anything about that time. I think I’d give it a re listen even. A book book I just finished is this one. A buddy wrote it, his trips from BC. A true family man with a passion for...

New walnut for an old classic

Jerry fisher has a few to scale prints of his designs. The are like a schematic with the measurements throughout the stock. I think they will be a good reference for a guy who’s learning :)

New walnut for an old classic

Got the sling mounts and spartan adaptor in there. The forend is pretty close, I’ll swap end here and get the butt shaped and the recoil pad on so I can start shaving down the cheek piece. Fitting the rear I ended up with a chip out With some finish it should be unnoticeable.

New walnut for an old classic

Took a little holiday to chase winter goats with a couple buddy’s. Was good to get out of the basement and into the hills. Good friend connected on a 11 year old Billy. Iv been looking for Jerry’s prints for years! Midway won’t ship up here to Canada. I put an add in a Canadian forum and...
