I wish I would have went with the 6400. The 4800 is just big enough for me on a 7-8 day trip. I mean top not rolled, just buckled. Of course, as the trip goes on and my food bag gets smaller, it gets better.
I'm glad you mentioned working on my moose calling skills. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks. I didn't check Trout Lake but I believe Swan Lake is all booked up for the dates we will be there. I'll take a 2nd look.
I appreciate the reply.
We probably won't get a chance to get out on a charter as we plan to hunt hard. I've brought a pole on almost every hunt for 6 or so years and never wet a line. I always say "just in case I tag out early" or "I'm going to take it easy this time". I hope I can figure...
We will definitely be keeping some fat. Steve Rinella is part of the reason for my black bear obsession. There is a Meateater episode where he cooks bear meat in rendered bear fat and talks about the fat.
You didn't ask but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents anyway. I love hunting out of a bivy. The #1 reason, I'm lazy. I keep my sleeping bag inside it stuffed into my pack. It keeps it dry if my pack gets wet and when we decide to make camp, I layout my pad and throw down my bag, that's it. I carry...
I guess I am in the minority here. I find it to be unnecessary weight. If I'm going to pay hundreds of dollars to drop a pound here and there, I'm not off setting it with 3 lbs (I actually don't have any idea what my handgun weighs) of just in case. I already have a rifle.
I'm not knocking...
I use an app called Alpine Quest. It comes with USGS, Google and Bing maps & aerials. You can download a map area for offline use but what I really like is that if you view a map, it's automatically downloaded. So as I am getting ready for a trip and looking at maps, it's automatically saving...
I ordered a hard copy of that map. As for the hiking, I doubt I can talk the rest of the guys into it but I will definitely keep it in mind for when my wife and I make the trip.
Bloodvein River Outfitters. I'm still waiting on my dad to get me a picture of their bears but he isn't great with technology. They show plenty of big bears on their website though.
My dad actually wanted to go back to Upper Russian but I talked him out of it. I'm glad to hear you think I made the right choice. And I am not choosy, we will be making due with binos.
I will check out the cameras, thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the info, I really do appreciate it. My original plan was to commit to one side or the other (east or west) but I like your plan better. I'll definitely take a day to glass from the lake and come up with a plan of attack.
