I've used a tarp and bivy combo for years and really enjoy camping this way. I'm in New Zealand so our conditions/climates are a bit different, but it is fine in heavy rain [I sometimes fashion a shallow drainage ditch to keep any growing puddles at bay] as long as you have a light weight...

I'm glad you had a good time here. When I was in my late 20's I had 7 months in North America mainly hiking in the Canadian Rockies -that was one of the best times of my life.

Used responsibley, like any alcohol, this light weight option would be a bonus for backpackers. But if abused ie those guys camped just up the valley who have brought it in in bulk it has the potential of making their neighbours trip a nightmare. At least regular alcohol is self limiting in...
