I've recently purchased a hammock to use on my Red Deer hunts here in New Zealand. The Revelation seems perfect for hanging in the hammock.

Backcountry tarp

I've used a tarp and bivy combo for years and really enjoy camping this way. I'm in New Zealand so our conditions/climates are a bit different, but it is fine in heavy rain [I sometimes fashion a shallow drainage ditch to keep any growing puddles at bay] as long as you have a light weight...

Yeah I'm in Christchurch. There is some progress evident with rebuilding now in the central business district. I'm glad you had a good time here. When I was in my late 20's I had 7 months in North America mainly hiking in the Canadian Rockies -that was one of the best times of my life.

Cheers gmajor - I hope NZ treated you well and you have some good memories. CHCH has changed a lot, as you may know we had a series of damaging earthquakes and the centre of town has essentially been torn down.

Palcohol, lightweight booze

Used responsibley, like any alcohol, this light weight option would be a bonus for backpackers. But if abused ie those guys camped just up the valley who have brought it in in bulk it has the potential of making their neighbours trip a nightmare. At least regular alcohol is self limiting in...
