I hunt WY for Mule deer and it's a few years of collecting preference points, so I won't pass up any decent muture bucks. That said, I wouldn't take a young deer just to fill the tag and would suffer through the bitter taste of tag soup instead.
Fair question as that is a lot of points. I've never had that many - I don't have that kind of patience. Certainly neither required 14. But they did put us on huge bulls, which is more important in my mind.

I took my son on a Wyoming Wilderness hunt on the border of Yellowstone (guided horseback, remote camp) when he was 12 on a right of passage (first big game) elk hunt with his grandpa. It was extremely physical, we saw 25 Grizz (probably some repeats), it snowed, rained, we heard wolves howling...
I've used Yellowstone outfitters and Trispoke for horseback elk trips in WY. Both were excellent, remote camps. Trispoke is more likely to have space for 2025.
Yellowstone Outfitters is excellent - great remote camp - I've been twice with them
Trispoke Outfitters is also incredible - got two bulls with my son two years ago and saw more bulls than I've ever seen on a hunt. More likely to have some open spots, as well.
Good plan! You do need to keep buying them or they "expire." You can skip a year, but not two in a row so stay diligent and mark your calendar for the annual preference points purchase.
Also agreed on the cow/calf (type 6) tag - great way to learn the area. And great meat!
You need a guide...
