You responded to my other forum post too! Thanks! And yeah, 308 and 30 06 have definitely been on my radar as well. I think I was instilled with an old school mentality from my older brother that 30 06 will always be the go to caliber. And I grew up in Illinois where I feel like everyone I knew...
Edit to add: I have a moderate amount of shooting experience in general. I grew up hunting waterfowl so I’ve been shooting shotguns my whole life. I did a lot of handgun and rifle shooting for fun throughout my teens and 20s, but very little with magnum cartridges. Shot a 300 weatherby mag a...
I’ve borrowed and shot other rifles from friends and family, but have never owned my own rifle except for an AR. I’ve shot 308, 30-06, 300 weatherby, and 223 a ton while working nuclear security.
I'm new here and would like some opinions on a rifle. I am looking at a Browning X Bolt and a Tikka T3X. I think I would be happy with either but I found the X Bolt for $100 cheaper and with my budget, I would prefer to spend less. I am still open to both if anyone wants to weigh in on their...
Was looing for an answer to this also. This is outside my budget a little bit but with the feedback on it in this thread, I think I am going to save a little longer and try to find one used on here.
I'm on a tight budget so I have to keep my range in the vicinity of $200 and think I am going to go with a cheaper vortex after reading this thread and considering the warranty.
My head sure is spinning, but I am seeing some commonality in the advice I'm receiving which is nice. I am definitely down to chat. I will shoot you a PM.
A lighter/ferro rod/striker and a fire starter (cottonball and petroleum jelly/esbit cubes or something similar). Keep in in your pants or bino harness just in case you need to get a fire started in a pinch and you don't have your pack close by.
This sounds perfect. Thank you.
I’ll definitely get what I can afford, but those are likely higher than I can spend at the moment (I own a small vertical farming business so I don’t make too much haha)
I’ll definitely be spending a lot of time in the backcountry as I live very close to the unit I’m hunting. I also have a friend who works for the forest service in that unit and is going to help me get a decent start scouting. I wish we were hunting together but he’s hunted that unit for years...
I intend to follow that rule for sure. I was thinking that, like you said, for optics, firearm, pack, boots. My budget is flexible as I have been saving for this for about 2 years and I already have some equipment. I just want to be careful when it comes to optics. Thanks for your advice.
