Montana (and other state) hunter orange laws out dated?

For most of our history, NYS did not require wearing blaze orange. The thinking was two fold: 1. More hunters were already wearing orange than many states that mandated the use of orange 2. It was believed that if wearing orange was mandated, that some hunters would be more likely to shoot at...

    Denali Moose - Illegally Killed

It sounds like the judge stepped way over his authority. But what do I now?

    Hideaway Lodge Newfoundland Review

Virtually all outfitters exaggerate (IME) when they are trying to get you to book a hunt. When the hunting starts, so do the excuses. "It's too hot, it's too cold, the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, they don't move in the rain, we slaughtered them last week, rut is starting late this...

    Newfoundland rain gear

Tall rubber boots all the way. Lots of the bog looks like it will support your weight, right up to the moment that you have all pf your weight on one foot. You probably won't be walking all that far so good leather boots aren't needed or desirable IMO. Decent rain gear is important because...

    Found rifle

I was hunting in NC two weeks ago. I shot a nice buck in the middle of a soybean field. The beans were about 18"-24" high and the buck just disappeared at the shot. It was still good light and I was able to walk almost directly to the downed animal. Past experience has taught me that a fallen...

COW Elk Hunting Opportunities - First Timer

I was just looking at BearPaw Outfitters in Washington state. The rates are very good and I think the tags are over the counter, but you'd need to check.

    PA No Sunday Hunting

I can remember the "Blue Laws" in NY when I was a kid. Virtually nothing was open except the local deli and the movie theater. Things were certainly better back then. Virtually everyone spent time with their families and had time to relax because only the Police had to work. I didn't hunt back...

    Property vs 401K

I considered buying a second place many times. After discussing all the issues/options with others who had second properties my wife and I decided to NOT buy. Buying a place that you are not in full-time can have real problems. Vandals know who is not in FT residence. Storms, fires and mishaps...

    Tipping In Newfoundland

Everyone, everywhere, prefers American currency. I've hunted in Newfoundland many times. I never had any Canadian currency with me. Outfitters and others will do a quick conversion for you. However, the conversion rate isn't universal, and some retailers will make money on the conversion. Not...

    Quitting Alcohol

I learned to drink to excess at college. Fortunately, when I left college I leveled off. I remained a social drinker most of my adult life. I certainly enjoy a good beer or a nice cocktail now and then. Over time I became a bit of a wine connoisseur. While I try to keep it in check, I'll have...

Ideas for staying awake while driving solo

Be honest with yourself when you're getting groggy and STOP. We had 4 guys in a brand new Chevy Suburban and were driving around the clock. We switched drivers about every 4hrs but no one slept at all. Around noon a new driver took over. Within a half hour he ran into a steel guardrail at...

    Hunting or fishing themed Tattoo

One other tattoo story that is funny but true. When I was going to college, I worked parttime in a hospital. An unconscienced guy comes in who had apparently overdosed. The first thing they do in the emergency room is cut off all of your clothes when they need to assess injuries. It was noticed...

    Hunting or fishing themed Tattoo

A guy that I knew had several tattoos. The last one that he did was a tattoo that covered his entire a$$ and looked like the two hemispheres of your brain. He told me that is was very painful and he could only do one cheek at a time. LOL His a$$ was profiled in one of the big tattoo magazines...

    Hunting or fishing themed Tattoo

Just a couple of thoughts: Two of my buddies had their wives' names tattooed on themselves. They are now both divorced and with different women. Almost every guy that I worked with had tatoos. Some had some extensive stuff. Now that they have aged a bit, several will say how much they regret...

    Newfoundland moose hunt

I've hunted moose in Newfoundland many times. Everywhere we went it was WET with soft, sinking bog. You need high rubber boots. I used a set of Muck boots and was very happy with them. If you wear leather hunting boots, you'll spend more time looking at the ground to avoid steeping in a wet...

    Rich Man's Sport

My Utah outfitter told me that prices are ridiculously high because hunters, themselves, drive the prices up. He claims that there is no shortage of hunters who outbid each other for good tags or prime locations. He admitted that outfitters are just enjoying the price wars that are created by...

    Canada moose hunting

I drove up from NY several times, hauling my 5'x8' trailer. It really was no problem at all. There is nothing quite like a Newfoundland moose hunt. I always had a great time and took some nice bulls. I also took a good bear on one of the trips and did some sightseeing along the Viking Trail...

PA Great American Outdoor Show - Feb 4-12

The best thing about the show is that you get some new hunting "ideas". I've booked a number of hunts there even though I didn't go there for that purpose. We go early in the morning, stay all day, and take a hotel. The next day we go to Cabelas, which is on the way back home.
