I had pretty big chunks of meat and they stayed completely frozen. I purchased blocks of dry ice at first and it was not working well, with the pellets the meat froze almost instantly and stayed frozen. I made sure the meat was completely submurged in the ice. I did not fly with the dry ice.
Hello,
I have done both European mounts and shoulder mounts for deer and elk. I grew up in Illinois and everyone got their big deer shoulder mounted. I then moved to Colorado and found most people did skull mounts. I have done both, but my skull mounts are always smaller deer that I don't want...
Wanted to follow up on my trip and how it went.
I did harvest a mule deer, and was able to get it home without much issue. My buddy tore his knee and was not able to go. So I went solo. Here is how it went:
1. Day of the Kill: Got the deer deboned into game bags and off the mountain. I had to...
His recommendation was to take it to a local taxidermist to have it prepped, tanned and shipped to him. Its preference would be I drive the cape back or shoot the deer in Illinois. Too bad there's no Mule deer in Illinois
Yeah, there is a chance it will fit in the bag we bring the meat back in. There's also a good chance it doesn't. The convenience of dropping it off somewhere and not having to worry about extra bags fees, or getting it back to my freezer in good condition is worth paying a little to have to...
Does anyone have any experience getting a deer tanned in one state and shipped to a taxidermist in another? I live in Illinois and have a local taxidermist I trust (and he's affordable). I am flying in for a mule deer hunt in Arizona. If I am lucky enough to bag a wall hanger I am looking into...
Wanted to share an update:
Measured the Costco/HD/Lowes totes. The 27ga variety were all slightly over the allowable size for Southwest. It was very close and it's likely they might be allowed on but don't really want to risk it.
Worked a waterfowl expo this weekend and Divebomb had their...
Yes but you are not shipping the whole deer, just the deboned meat. The gut pile alone is probably close to 40lb, then you have to subtract the bones, hide, meat you don't harvest. I'm thinking 50-70lbs of deboned meat is probably what I'm looking at. Be mindful this is a backpack hunt so the...
I have these at the house. It looks like the dimensions would pass the checked luggage requirements. Have you ever had any issue flying with them? Anyone at the gate ever gave you any trouble claiming they are over size limits?
I was wondering this as well. My wife flies with a "personal item* which is a purse the size of my carry on suitcase and nobody has ever said a word to her about it. The deer horns may be less sneaky
There's definitely added time from the flight time. But the 20 hour drive is also estimated to the nearest town when in actuality its closer to 22.5hr to the trail head not counting stops for food/ rest.
I live 30min from the St. Louis Airport which is not a busy airport so its easy to...
Am I the crazy one for wanting to fly for 2hours instead of driving for 20+? lol
I've done it many times (use to live in Colorado and drive back to Illinois a couple times a year) and I definitely prefer flying but I might change my mind after this experience trying to get a deer home!
I'm not sure why I would need to ship anything to AZ? We will be able to get all of our gear in our frame packs as a checked bags + our two free carry ons. We will actually have an extra checked bag extra we will not use for the flight back. The issue is if we will be able to get a deboned mule...
Thank you. I don't have a soft cooler but have a 70L dry duffle bag I plan on using. I heard of splitting the horns and I should be able to fit them in one of our frame packs.
Again we have an extra checked bag so the first 50lb is free. Any other extra bags would be $125. So if we need extra...
I figure I have a free checked bag that I can pack 50lbs of deboned meat. Plus any extra room in our carry on duffles which are water proof. Any extra bags will cost $125 each. So even if we need two extra bags it would be $250 which is cheaper than shipping.
I am not ruling out dropping off a...
I would obviously debone and freeze the meat prior to packing it. Also no I would not try to fly "the whole head home" I would skull cap the horns. Sorry I thought this was implied.
