Counterpoint, I've seen a small climb deter almost everyone in the right places. We hunt a wilderness area, where no vehicles are allowed, but there are ATV accessible trails nearby. All of the other hunters in the area seem to stick to those trails, because riding is a lot more fun than...
Out of curiosity, why did you choose a 6-24x optic? It seems like you could save a lot of weight with something smaller, and even hunting pronghorn, which is most of what I do, I can't think of a hunting scenario that would require 24x instead of something more like 16x. Even most PRS shooters...
I think the Bergaras you listed would be a great choice. I always gravitate to something with a Remington 700 style action, since you'll invariably discover things you might like to change about the gun and having a remington 700 footprint makes anything easily replaceable at almost any budget...
Nice work! Looks like a great rifle. Plus, even if it doesn't shoot any better than the next guy's gun, it's always more fun if you put some work in to make it yours and fit your needs.
I think the thing that did us in was all the people who moved here. Sure, there are definitely a lot of the AR-15 liberals here (never thought I would have to type that phrase, but here we are), but I think the thing that really put us over the edge was all of the people who moved to the cities...
Based on the map I guess I hunt one of the windier areas, so it makes sense I've worried about it a bit more. I plan on a 10mph wind for my max range. Definitely doesn't make it any easier
The importance of opening day can also depend on how many tags are being given out in your unit, especially with the droughts of the last 20 years really knocking the tag numbers down in most places. Are you hunting a unit with hundreds of square miles of public land with only a few tags...
Consider looking in "free gifts" that conservation/hunting organizations give out for small donations periodically. I got mine from RMEF. They're usually cheap and not the fanciest things ever, but they're usually pretty small and light if you're looking for something simple and packable.
