Montana (and other state) hunter orange laws out dated?

I’m a Montana resident, and I don’t see any issue with requiring orange. In more open area it allows me to spot other hunters and adjust my tactics accordingly. In thicker timber, I think it has some potential safety value as well. I fill my tags regardless of what color I’m wearing, so it’s...

2023 MULE DEER OFFICIAL MEAT POLE THREAD

Spotted off the highway on the way to deer camp. It was my first Muley as I have some good whitetail areas and prefer the meat. It was pretty fun to roll into camp with a deer in the back and eat tenderloins that night. 45 minutes from sighting to back on the road.

2023 OFFICIAL ELK MEAT POLE THREAD

My X-bolt is getting bored of my Hoyt. New to Rokslide, but this was the last weekend of archery season in the Bridgers (MT)

    Mystery Ranch aquired by Yeti

There's been a lot of buyouts of Bozeman based outdoor companies, and many of them have not been bad. I prefer to see them locally owned and operated, but he's not going to be able to sell that to some young, hungry outdoors person. It's just too big. My fingers are crossed for the quality...

    Sitka, Kuiu, or another brand

I'm team Sitka. It seems to strike the right balance of quality, weight, and durability for me. Some of the Stone Glacier and Kuiu stuff I've seen get wrecked on one trip. I don't the patience or pocketbook for that. That being said, the merino base layers stretched like crazy for me around...

    Pics of Custom Knives

Check out Hammer and Tine. A young Montana couple in the Bitteroot make knives and leather products. I picked this up a few months ago. The quality is excellent.

    West hunting shooting distances

There's a lot of good info here, but I'll reiterate a few good points. Regardless of your kill range, practice further out. I would never want to juggle the target panic of shooting an animal at the furthest range I have shot my bow. Conditions change everything. I regularly take my block...

Is the 6.8 western gaining traction or did the 7mm prc finish it off?

I bought an X-bolt speed in 6.8 western the first week they were available, and I love it (after a new trigger). Obviously the 7prc wasn't an option then, but I would make the same decision today. In something like the X-bolt speed, you are not throwing a box of ammo through it at the range...

Ever Used Your Sidearm While Hunting?

I've pulled mine for a bear in my solo backcountry camp in the middle of the night and for a sow and cub that were getting a little too close during archery season. I wasn't going for a sow with a cub, just prepared in case she made a visual before she scented me. The cub was inside 15yds...

    Dropping pack to stalk...

I pack a medium sized fanny pack in my larger pack that is big enough for a small first aid kit, snacks, a little water, Garmin, and a kill kit. It keeps additional straps off my shoulders and my Glock 29 and cell phone go to my bino harness. If it's cold I'll toss the phone in a pocket for...

    Sidearm or Not?

Glock 29 at all times. I'm not a big fan of mixing up my basic kit, and I like to have everything in the same place every time I go out. It keeps simple mistakes to a minimum, and in Montana you never know what you'll run into.

What lb bow do you use for Elk?

75# and the two bulls I have been fortunate enough to drop have ran less than 40yds. Pass through on both.
