    Interesting bullet expansion study.

Yep. That is an interesting article. I can confirm that Barnes LRX fired from my 270 this fall did great on a cow elk at 250 yards. The shot was broadside and went through and through. No bullet recovered but it seemed to have a nice wound channel and went through multiple ribs. She only went 60...

    New Guy

Welcome and well said. I was in the same boat as you. I’ve hunted whitetail my whole life. My first elk hunt was last year and it was a great experience even though I didn’t get one. I went on my second DIY elk hunt this year and actually brought home a nice cow. It was a great experience and I...

    Best Cheap Headlamp

If you just want a few to stash and use in a pinch the energizer ones work great and are pretty cheap. I have a streamlight enduro pro headlamp that is a bit more money but lite and bright.

    Cow hunt

Exactly! I’m new to elk hunting and the trips I have taken so far were great experiences with my kids with or without an elk to pack out. Of course it is sweeter when you pack out a heavy pack with them on the last day.

Gear that lasted over 20 years

My Leatherman, Kelty sleeping bag and most of my firearms are more than 20yrs old. My Winchester model 100 in 308 is one of my favorites. I still wear my ARMY issue boots from 30 years ago.

    Cow hunt

If you want to focus on elk pick a few states that you would be ok traveling to from the midwest and study application procedure and regulations of those states. The odds of drawing and success rates are posted by each state but that is by no means guaranteed. In general the draw odds for cow...
