    Homemade Backcountry Boot Dryer

Lots of variables, but will help for sure. Moving air through it will certainly help versus just being stagnant. Heat would also help, and both would be best. I loosened laces a bunch and had it run overnight sitting in the tent. Son's boots weren't completely drenched, but socks were pretty...

    Homemade Backcountry Boot Dryer

I used them last week on my son's boots after he slipped and got some water over the ankle on an overnight backpack trip. I just turned them on when we went to bed and they were dry when I woke up, and my battery pack had plenty of life left. Nothing scientific, but it worked. I can weigh...

    Value of Old Intel

Looking for some opinions. Have some intel from a co-worker where he and his group camped and killed elk each year 2015-2019. I don't know yet how many were in the group and had licenses, etc., but at least killed 1 every year. I've looked everywhere I can see and there hasn't been...

    Hunting in the trees

For those that hunt in areas with limited high glassing areas what are some strategies when going in to a new area and looking to locate game? A lot of focus is on getting up to glassing spots and locating elk to make a play on when possible, but looking at an area that tops out about 10,500...

    Homemade Backcountry Boot Dryer

No idea how well they'll work, just blowing some air so will do something, but not like a heated one I could use at home. Problem is using heat drives the power consumption way up. Saw a USB powered one on Amazon for cheap but it draws 2A instead of 0.3, so will run batteries down fast. I...

    Homemade Backcountry Boot Dryer

So tried to attach but the file types are not allowed. Can reach out to me privately and see about sending potentially. I have no issue sharing the files, not something I'm trying to monetize or take sales from any available products, just something to play with.

    Homemade Backcountry Boot Dryer

Boot dryer blowing air only (no heat), but runs at about 1.5W (.3A, 5V) on a USB so can run off a battery pack or other charging device. Added an optional online switch. Saw similar online for $90 and figured I could make my own simply enough. About an hour in CAD, 3d printer, $15 buying some...

    Northern Ohio boot store?

Looks like Charm's has one of the best selections I've seen based on website. Premier Outdoors looks like it's about 15 min from Charm and is 1 of 2 stores listed in Ohio as Crispi dealer (though Premier doesn't mention it on website). Will have to make a trip that way this winter.

    Northern Ohio boot store?

Haven't looked around MI or Indiana, which could be just as close as Cleveland from you.

    Northern Ohio boot store?

Not many options around our way for some of the popular brand for our West. Not familiar around Toledo, but there's a couple backpacking shops in greater Cleveland that carry some better options, and one shop I found east of Cleveland that was at least listed as a Crispi dealer but have never...

    Whole house Water Softener Systems

It's minuscule, but it does add sodium. The sodium ions replace the calcium or other "hardness" ions to soften the water. The vast majority of the salt does go to drain during regeneration though so you shouldn't taste salt, as you mentioned.

    Whole house Water Softener Systems

Unless you have a massive house or showers with a bunch of heads, etc, most homes don't use more than 5 gpm at a time. Anything that can provide 8-10 gpm would be fine in almost all cases and just about everything out there meant for whole home use can do that or better. RO systems for sinks...

    Whole house Water Softener Systems

Few comments: For all but really problem water, a softener from Amazon or a big box retailer works fine. You pay those dealers for service and expertise. For complicated water (lots of iron, sulphur, pH) often additional filters might be needed, or special softeners that can contain different...

    Elk pack size

New stains are a good problem to have. Unfortunately not much opportunity around here in Ohio to fit much western hunting gear, similar issue with trying boots. Have a few places geared to backpacking, so some overlap but not much. Have family in AK that hunts so leaning heavily on them along...

    Elk pack size

New to Western elk hunting so never used more than a day pack here. Trying to balance getting good gear and balancing cost where I can. On a pack, would lean to K4 or SG, but great sale prices on MR Metcalf. Typical hunt will be 5 days or less, usually camp by truck but will carry light in...

    CPW Harvest Reports

I know the thread evolved and I've read several others touting mandatory reporting too. In Ohio all big game harvests are "tagged" electronically with an automated phone system or online. Can't be much added cost to that, but stops short of full mandatory reporting regardless of success...

    CPW Harvest Reports

Knew it was survey-based, but thought it might still provide some trend insight, but maybe not. Was just reading some other posts essentially saying the same, that the reports are meaningless. Still interested on if there would be much shift in where people chose to hunt and impact then on...

    CPW Harvest Reports

Researching for first trip out in 2024, hoping to do 1st Rifle draw. Looks like the stats that CPW publishes came out in March last year, is that timing what we should expect? Hoping to learn how hunter numbers and harvest numbers were impacted by the winter kill. Know cow tag numbers were...
