I think a bunch of people need to read the ancient P.O. Ackley books. A long time ago he advocated small calibers, high velocity and quick twists. There was 17 and 22 cal testing done on feral horses or donkeys (been a while since I read the books) confirming success. Considering the crap...
I deer hunted with mine tonight. This is the first year having this scope so I constantly compare it to my Zeiss 10x binos and can't tell any useable difference. I can easily shoot until 30 min after sunset per the law.
I used to use a Remington 870 Special Purpose 12 gauge for everything. Full camo, 21 in barrel. It isn't made anymore. Fantastic gun that shot turkey, geese, and upland birds. It fit great and I shot it very well. Ended up relegating it to a home defense role as neck issues forced me into a semi...
You guys are making me hungry! When we were younger my wife and I struggled with what to do with shanks. We didn't grind them into burger as we don't like that much sinew and silver skin in the burger. I used to try and separate sections and get the clean meat out, and of course that was super...
Like others have said, it's a non-issue. Besides, a 223 will have a medium bolt throw not a long one. I've never noticed the difference, but I run a bolt pretty hard.
Besides, having a long action means you can swap barrels and bolt stop and move to a long action cartridge in the same gun.
The...
There's no way I'm sitting in a stand all day. I don't have the ability to concentrate that long, and IMHO you have to concentrate. If you are reading or looking at a phone then you will miss something, either a fast moving deer or another animal cluing you in that a deer is coming. I've read...
Only one shot today on walk-in hunting ground, but made it count;) It's always fun to get out with a dog and watch the pure joy they get in the field.
Yesterday at 5AM I shot a rabbit in the garden with the 17HMR. She grabbed it and went to the front door of the house to be let inside. Looks...
It's a fantastic opportunity for the right person. Spend 6 years or so and hunt sheep, moose, caribou, and bear basically for free. Screw those $60k sheep and $25k moose hunts ;) The Ptarmigan hunting is pretty awesome in that area too.
I had my heart set on a black and white color but wouldn't change a thing now! She's my constant companion. As others said, she does not handle heat well.
Go for it!
I have a young female French Brittany and she is awesome. My first bird dog and was so easy to train. They are supposed to be a versatile breed and that's the truth. She'll hunt anything. I was very surprised how little she sheds.
She's snoozing on the couch next to me right now :)...
I'd put in a licking branch, scrape the dirt underneath and take a piss in the scrape. Put the branch on a field edge if possible and put a camera on it. If he's around he'll find it, especially when the other deer start using it.
It's amazing how well this works to see what bucks are around...
