Learning to black bear hunt in CA

Appreciate the pointer. I can make it about anywhere. I’ve got no problem driving and fortunately have a pretty flexible schedule allowing me to devote a fair amount of time. Looks like that area sees a decent number of bears harvested so your tip makes sense.

Learning to black bear hunt in CA

Appreciate the input, interesting how valuable those acorns can be to them and how quick it happens. Is this western Sierra you’ve done this? Any certain time of day they seemed more active? Also if you don’t mind, i haven’t hunted in CA before, is public land pretty crazy around deer season opener?

Learning to black bear hunt in CA

Listened to his podcast with Mike Costello. Seth of black bear pursuit seems to have a major focus on mule deer, but I’ll have to look through there and see what I can find on bears as well. He seems to be a bit further north than me but if I do any hunting on the western foothills I’m sure his...

Learning to black bear hunt in CA

Listened to the Huntin ain’t easy podcast series on black bear. Here is what stuck out to me. Do these track with everyone? Anything major missing? I’m out of Bakersfield so plan to hunt the Sierras, probably spend some time both on east and west side. Bear are much more adaptable than many...

    Alaska bear hunting outfitters

I look for 3 things 1- success- If I am unlikely to be successful, I can just go sit in the woods without an outfitter lol 2- price- I, like I imagine most hunters, do have some sort of budget. Many outfitters don't show price on their site, and if thats the case I leave the site and keep...

Learning to black bear hunt in CA

I'm looking for some recommendations on where to start when it comes to bears in the Sierra (books, podcasts, videos etc) to start to learn more about them until I can get into the mountains come May. Seems like there are certain elevations, changing food sources, spot and stalk vs calling...

    CA Late Season Bear Hunt

On private land with a small limited hunting area, I would agree on not wanting to over pressure animals, but on public land with lots of options, I'm going to have to agree with PredatorSlayer. That being said I haven't hunted bear before, but I have killed dozens of deer, a few elk and a...

How Have the California Bears Reacted?

How did others end up? Will hopefully be getting out a couple weeks in 2024.

    Help Planning a Trip

Another note, white tail buck are typically much easier to draw than any deer tags which is what I typically do (often even some leftover tags around). I hunted as a resident there for the last 15 years so was able to get a few buck tags per year between special buck, muzzleloader, west river...

    Help Planning a Trip

Very difficult to get an any deer tag in any decent unit with public land in South Dakota without points. Many of them take a non resident 10points or more.

First Time Mule Deer Hunt - DIY West River South Dakota

Thats SD mule deer for ya. Whitetail will run to the next county if lightly bumped but muleys seem to show up at the truck and be generous is giving additional opportunity. Nice job!

First Time Mule Deer Hunt - DIY West River South Dakota

I’ve killed 40 or so deer in SD and a lot of hunters are SD residents and only hunt opening weekend. Week days are often comparatively ghost towns and the rest of the season is significantly reduced compared to opener. Also rug usually starts to pick up more and you get more deer movement. Good...

    Help Planning a Trip

Are you wanting to go next year or starting to plan something a few years out? Some states/areas practically require some years of points to draw as a nonresident. I live out west but have always hunted the same areas and recently started looking into other states and I’ve narrowed it down to CO...

First Time Mule Deer Hunt - DIY West River South Dakota

Any luck? Interested if you were able to get away from the craziness or if there were still a lot of hunters around? Seem like a lot of public gets hammered pretty hard these days

    Getting back to hunting

Thanks Eddie. Hope to be able to contribute. If anyone has any questions about SD hunting, I have it pretty dialed in as far as understanding the application/point process and where the best areas are whether you’re wanting public or private and how long you’re willing to wait for a tag...

    Getting back to hunting

#8 private land whitetail. on my parents 10acre where they plan to build a new house in the Black Hills. Set up a tree stand and waited. After not seeing movement I decide to through out a grunt right before heading down. This guy can charging in. To this day still the only animal I have called...

    Getting back to hunting

#7 public land whitetail. After hunting almost everyday of the season and getting a few opportunities, I had begun to think it wasn’t going to happen for me this year. I was walking back to the truck after about 4 miles of hiking hoping to bump something, when I decided I needed to take a piss...

    Getting back to hunting

#6 section line whitetail. NW SD. In SD (not sure on laws elsewhere) but there are section lines between prices of private where hunting is legal. My dad and I were walking this section line to get access to a piece of BLM where we planned to hunt that evening but on our way in we came across...

    Getting back to hunting

#5 walk in access mule deer. NW SD. Opening weekend this year we had a storm I hadn’t before experienced. It was a freezing rain slush that layered ice onto everything. Pieces for grass were as thick as a nickel with ice. Opening gates required chiseling ice off. It was windy and below zero that...

    Getting back to hunting

#4 public land archery whitetail. Another birthday buck. Was a cold day in the tree stand. Sat from sun up when the snow moved in, which often gets the deer moving throughout the day in this area. Was also during the rut (late Nov). This guy came right in. I was so cold after not moving while...
